Today started off just fine, with a good walk to the gym and back. I didn't take time to work out because I was planning to walk down later to recycle cardboard and buy challah. When I got back to our building, however, the elevator was not working. Now, I usually walk DOWN the stairs (all 72 of them) when I'm going out, but I prefer to go UP on the elevator. So, I was a little annoyed. I had picked up the mail from our mailbox and was carrying it in my hand as I went up. I don't know what happened, but for some reason I tripped and fell just after I passed the floor right below ours. When I landed, my glasses got twisted and cut me in 2 places: a BIG gash at the top of my right eyelid and a small cut on the bridge of my nose. I also apparently tore a ligament in my shoulder. Anyway, so there I was, bleeding like crazy and continuing up the stairs to get home, trying to catch the blood on the mail I was carrying.
I got into the bathroom and got the bleeding stopped, for the most part. Then I could see exactly what had happened, in the mirror. I had to sit down at my desk for a while and just whimper a bit. In fact, I was beginning to feel a bit faint and feared that I might pass out, but I didn't. I was also worried that I wouldn't be able to wear even my other pair of glasses because of the nose scratch, but when I tried them on, I found that they ride at a slightly different place on my nose. This was a big relief, because I can't do ANYTHING without my glasses!
I took 800 mg of ibuprofen for the pain and was feeling a little better by breakfast. Of course, I abandoned my plan of walking down to recycle cardboard and buy challah. I decided somewhat reluctantly that I had better call Berlitz and cancel my lessons for the day (two 2-unit classes: 9:00-10:30 and 11:00-12:30). I was able to drive over to the Maccabi clinic in town, only to find out that they were closed. So, I drove BACK to the one here in our neighborhood (where our family doctor is) and was relieved to find that they were open. Of course, I had to wait a bit, but they got me in to see Dr. Vaknin, our family doctor, and he sewed up the gash with 3 stitches. He also checked my shoulder and agreed with me that it's almost certainly NOT broken. He IS sending me in for an x-ray on Sunday, though, just to be sure. I also have to go back to see him after getting the x-ray so that he can check that everything is okay.
After I got back home, I decided to walk down after all and recycle the cardboard and buy challah. By then, of course, it was very hot, and there wasn't much shade. But I managed without any problems and didn't even feel that overheated.
David didn't feel like going out for lunch today, so I ordered food from Chooka -- classic noodles for him and sushi for me (although I ended up eating more of his noodles than he did!).
I've continue taking ibuprofen throughout the day to control the pain, so I don't feel too bad now. It difficult to avoid scratching the stitches, though, since they tend to itch just a bit. I'm doing pretty well, though.
Just as the sunlight was fading, we lit candles, drank sweet wine, and ate challah to welcome Shabbat.
Shabbat Shalom to everyone! שבת שלום לכולם
