I slept well last night even though I did wake up and change sides a number of times. Each time, though, I went back to sleep easily and quickly. Pascal slept close to me most of the night, too, I think.
I went to WIZO this morning. When I left the house, I was planning to walk, but then I decided to take the bus instead. Everyone there, of course, was really glad to see me back, and I was very happy to be back. I had definitely planned to take a bus back, but a member who has a car offered me a ride, which I readily accepted.
The rest of the day, I was mostly lazy, other than fixing food for myself and doing some grocery shopping. I even napped a time or two in my chair and another time actually in my bed. I think it's going to take a bit for me to get my strength back.
I am also disconcerted a bit by the "loose cannon" in pants. I am simple not used to having piss come shooting out without my permission! I guess that, too, will take some time. Of course, I'm using adult diapers (Depends), so it's more an inconvenience than anything else. It's a good thing the doctor at the hospital wrote that I should not work for 3 weeks!
I walked a total of 0.64 kilometers today.

Monday, 30 January 2017
I got up early this morning and sat around with some of the other patients, talking in a mixture of English and Hebrew. One of them was born in Bulgaria before the Second World War and lived there during it, only making aliyah afterwards. So many interesting stories!
Once things had settled down after the morning rounds, one of the male nurses and one of the doctors took my catheter out. It's nice to be rid of the bag, but it's going to be a while before I really get bladder control back, I fear. I was catheterized for 2 weeks straight. Luckily, I had taken a tip from a friend (and her late husband's experience), and brought a couple of Depends (diapers for adults) with me.
After getting the catheter removed, I just had to sit around and wait until my discharge letter was ready. My friend, David, came and joined me. When I was ready to leave, we walked over the to mall adjacent to the hospital (in a separate building but in the same security perimeter) and had pizza for lunch.
Then we sat together outside for a bit in a sunny spot and eventually walked over to his apartment, a fair distance away (and my idea). I was walking noticeably slower than I usually would (and I don't usually walk all that fast). I made it, though, without stopping and even up the 20-some stairs to his apartment. We just sat and chatted until it was time for me to catch the bus from there to the airport, which I did.
The flight home was uneventful, but I did have fun photographing the setting sun as it played peek-a-boo behind the airplane wing. One of them is today's pic of the day:
When I got back to Eilat, I decided to take a bus home instead of a taxi. I had to wait 20 minutes or so for it, but it was a nice way to get home.
Pascal, of course, was beside himself when I got home, so naturally I had to spend quite a bit of time with him, eventually sitting on my lap, before I could get much else done.
I walked a total of 4 kilometers today, a small part of it uphill here in Eilat (to the bus stop near the cinema).

I'm finally back to writing here. They successfully removed my prostate on the 17th, but they had some difficulty stitching the urethra back together again. This caused the surgery to last longer than expected, and so they sent me to intensive care afterwards instead of to the recovery room.
Just as they feared, the bladder had a hole that was leaking urine into the abdomen, so I had a 2nd surgery on Friday the 20th to fix that. It was successful, so I was finally ready to start the recovery process. On Sunday the 22nd, they finally transferred me back to the urology unit.
At first, I felt so exhausted that I couldn't stand without help and could hardly eat at all. But then my strength began returning rapidly. I could eat and enjoyed all my food (I have always liked hospital food). I started walking, first on my unit but gradually expanding to more floors and exploring more and more of the hospital. Today I even went outside for the first time.
They would have already sent me home if I had lived nearby, but I really didn't want to fly home with a catheter, so they agreed to keep me here until it is taken out, 10 days after the (2nd) operation. Out it comes tomorrow, and I'll be on my way back to sunny Eilat!
I walked a total of 4.3 kilometers today.

I slept pretty well last night and got up about 4:15 this morning. I was on my way to the airport at 4:34, arriving there a few minutes after 5:00.
After checking in, I ate breakfast at the airport. The flight went very nicely, and I took a bunch of pictures, as usual. One of them, a view of Tel Aviv at dawn, is today's pic of the day:
It took me about 50 minutes to walk from the airport to the hospital, where I arrived before 8:00. I found the urology unit and eventually got checked in. Both the nurse, whom I talked with in Hebrew, and the doctor, whom I spoke with in English, were excellent, thorough, informative, helpful, and friendly. Both lunch and supper were vegetarian and delicious. So I'm off to a fantastic start. I fast after midnight and am scheduled to go down for surgery tomorrow morning at about 8:30.
I walked a total of 6.8 kilometers today.

I got up early this morning and ate breakfast quite early, too. Then I set out walking into town. First stop was Maccabi, for my weekly blood draw.
After that, I walked down to the SuperPharm to buy "Depends", which I may need after the surgery for a while. I then stopped by the pet store, hoping to get a mouse for Goldfinger, but they didn't have any.
From there I decided to take a long, leisurely walk home, since it was such a nice day. I browsed a bit at the small household goods stores on HaTmarim and, in fact, bought a tote bag (7 shekels). I used to have 2 Shufersal tote bags that I used for groceries, but the handle finally broke on one of them, so I was down to just one. I thought I'd better have a spare (I only use one per shopping trip now, since the markets are close, so I can visit more often very easily).
I walked out all the way to the end of HaTmarim and then up the ring road and over to the Shufersal on Yerushalayim HaShlemah Street, where I picked up several items. From there, I walked home mostly on Harim Road (on down Argaman, of course). I took several pictures along my walk, including today's pic of the day, a shot of the sun behind a small cloud:
I had a salad and shnitzel for lunch and rested during the rest of the afternoon. In the evening, I walked down to Fay's house for our weekly play-reading group.
I walked a total of 8.6 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 14 January 2017
I went to bed late last night and got up late this morning, getting the day off to a lazy start.
I made a big mistake during breakfast. I started some rice cooking but forgot about it, leaving the fire on high. It was only when it had boiled dry and was beginning to burn that I smelled it and remembered it. I'm not sure whether my non-stick kettle is ruined or not, but I think it may be. Of course I had to throw out the rice, which I had intended to use with eggs for lunch.
After breakfast, I talked for some time with David on the phone, enjoying a fun chat.
At about 11:15, I left to walk into town. I had heard that there was some kind of happening for Shabbat, sponsored by the municipality, near the mall. Sure enough, there was loud (though mostly recorded) music and LOTS of fun activities for kids. The atmosphere, though, was lively and fun, so I enjoyed it for some time. I also just enjoyed sitting on a chaise in the sun by the beach.
Then I set out walking down the coast as far as the lower end of Nakhal Shakhamon. After taking a few pictures from the beach there, I headed up the nakhal, going all the way up past Harim Road, taking many pictures along the way, including today's pic of the day, a view of Aqaba in the sunlight with the sea in the shadow of a cloud:
When I got back home, I rested a little before preparing a late lunch: salad, 2 fried eggs on bread, and a couple of slices of cheese.
In the early evening, I had my regular chat with Joyce and her husband. A little later, I chatted again with David on the phone.
I walked a total of 7.1 kilometers today.

Friday, 13 January 2017
I got up fairly early this morning and had time to relax a little before breakfast. I did my second injection of Clexane this morning (the first was yesterday). I have to do this for the 4 days before my surgery instead of taking the Coumadin pills. These are both blood-thinners, but the pills take longer to work than the injections, so they want closer control right before the surgery, I assume.
I taught 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45 and 10:30-12:00. Between classes, I walked up to the bakery and bought challah for Shabbat and some nice cookies, as well. After finishing teaching, I did the weekly dusting and sweeping.
I had a salad, quesadillas, and a few cookies for lunch.
In the afternoon, I just relaxed. Then I lit candles, drank a little sweet red wine, and ate a bit of challah to welcome Shabbat.
In the evening, Bassia & David graciously invited me over to their place for a lovely meal, which I very much enjoyed, not to mention the good company. I took today's pic of the day just before going into their building:

Thursday, 12 January 2017
I slept quite well last night and got up fairly early this morning.
I ended up teaching 6 units of Berlitz lessons today, although I had only been scheduled for 4. During the morning lesson, I got a message asking if I'd like to do one at 4:30, and I accepted it: 9:30-11:00, 4:30-6:00, and 7:00-8:30.
After my morning lesson, I set out on a long, interesting walk. I went nearly to the end of Harim Road and then went on the dirt road that goes from the lower part of Ramat Yotam down to the quarry near Nakhal Shlomo. That is also the point in Nakhal Shlomo where the Camel Ranch is located.
After taking pictures of both the quarry and the ranch, I walked on down Nakhal Shlomo to the sea and then started walking north back toward town. Today's pic of the day is a view of the sea from the lower part of Nakhal Shlomo:
After walking most of the way, I felt tired and decided I had walked enough (more than 10 km), so I sat down at the bus stop by Dekel Beach and waited for the next bus. I only rode it one stop, to the mall.
I then treated myself to lunch at Café Café at the mall. I had a "Szechuan salad", a vegan dish that was absolutely scrumptious! I had never had it before, so I'm really glad I decided to try it.
After that, I walked over to another bus stop and waited to take the number 2 bus back home.

I slept well last night and got up fairly late this morning, having enjoyed just lying in bed and relaxing for quite some time first.
I taught 4 units of Berlitz lesson today: 9:30-11:00 and 3:00-4:30.
After my morning lesson I went out for a walk, following mostly the big loop but extending it in several places. I took a number of pictures along the way, especially of wildflowers. One of these is today's pic of the day:
After my last lesson, I scanned another full-length play for our group from Bassia's book. Then I just relaxed (and even napped a little in my chair) for the rest of the day.

Tuesday, 10 January 2017
I slept well last night and got up quite early this morning. I even managed to do the dishes (which I usually do on Fridays) before going to WIZO.
I talked to David as I walked to WIZO this morning.
Our program today at WIZO was a saxophone concert by Terry, which everyone enjoyed very much.
After WIZO, Isobel walked home with me so that I could show her how to feed Pascal and clean his box while I'm in the hospital.
I had a salad, quesadillas, and some cookies for lunch.
After lunch, I went for a walk around the big loop, slightly extended. The weather was really lovely out, with mostly blue sky and some patchy clouds. I took several pictures, including today's pic of the day, showing Aqaba and the Red Sea, as seen from the hills behind the hospital:
I taught 4 units of Berlitz lessons today: 4:15-5:45 and 7:00-8:30.
Between the 2 lessons, I did some grocery shopping at the Elimelech Supermarket (the one nearest to me).

Sunday, 8 January 2017
I slept decently last night but not perfectly. I got up quite early, though, giving me plenty of time to shower before walking down for my weekly blood test.
After the blood test, I had an hour before the WIZO breakfast, so I decided to walk over to the Breishit health food store. They didn't have the carob-peanut spread I was hoping to find (they're often out of it, in my experience), so I bought myself a package of Macadamia nuts as a sort of consolation prize. Then I walked over to the Soleil Boutique Hotel for the breakfast, arriving almost exactly at the appointed time.
I really enjoyed the breakfast this month and got my money's worth, for sure. The company was also excellent, as always.
Afterwards, I walked up to the pet store. Unfortunately, they still didn't have any mice, but I also needed to buy more cat food for Pascal, which they did have. They also still have 2 corn snakes. One is a caramel, I think, and the other is definitely a snow. It's a good thing I don't have any money, because, if I did, I'd probably buy them both! Today's pic of the day is of the snow:
I wandered home quite slowly, stopping several times to rest. Between the extra food in my belly and the bag of cat food (not to mention the Macadamia nuts), the walk uphill just seemed a little more difficult. I'm glad, though, that I just took my time and did NOT break down and take a bus.
I relaxed basically all afternoon, even napping a bit in my chair.
In the evening, I walked down to Fay's house for our play-reading group. We finished reading "Lady Windermere's Fan" (by Oscar Wilde) and also read "Something Unspoken" (by Tennessee Williams), and it was enjoyable, as always.
I walked a total of 11.1 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 7 January 2017
I slept well last night and got up a little later than normal.
After breakfast, I enjoyed a nice chat with David, and even before I finished, I started out on my morning walk.
I walked out almost to the end of Harim Road, and then headed up along the perimeter fence of the huge oil tank "farm" in Ramat Yotam. I had been out that way nearly 5 years ago but not since, so I knew that I'd eventually get to the north rim of Nakhal Shlomo, which I followed for a bit. Then I turned back and followed the perimeter fence on the other side, effectively going all the way around the facility. I was out walking for more than two and a half hours. Of course, I took a number of photos along the way, including today's pic of the day, a view of the lovely varied colors of the Eilat Mountains, as seen from Ramat Yotam:
After resting a little upon my return, I had corn on the cob and my traditional eggs and rice for lunch.
In the afternoon, I just relaxed in my chair and napped a bit, too. Then I talked with Joyce and her husband in Ohio for some time.
In the evening, I continued scanning more one-act plays for our play-reading group.
I walked a total of 8.6 kilometers today.

Friday, 6 January 2017
I slept well last night and got up a bit late this morning. Before breakfast, I walked up to the bakery on bought challah and some cookies.
After breakfast, I walked into town because I had heard about a sort of shuk that they're going to be having from time to time on Fridays. There were several booths, selling arts and crafts, jewelry, a little produce, and some other food. I was a pretty small affair, but it was about what I expected. It was worth a walk down to check it out.
Rather than walking straight home, I went a very circuitous route, way over into Shakhamon. I took several pictures along the way, including today's pic of the day, a view up Nakhal Shakhamon from the Khativat HaNegev bridge:
I taught 2 units of Berlitz today: 12:00-1:30. It was the first lesson with a student with whom I'll be having a number of lessons. She's a Hungarian accountant working for an international pharmaceutical company.
After lunch (beets, quesadillas, and a salad), I rested most of the afternoon, including a short nap in my chair. I did manage to get the dusting and sweeping done, though.
In the evening, I had a nice chat with David.
I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate a little challah to welcome Shabbat.

Thursday, 5 January 2017
I slept well last night and got up late this morning.
After talking for a while with David on the phone, I did a load of laundry and got it hanging out to dry in the corridor.
I had a salad, a baked potato (baked in my toaster oven), and a couple of vegetarian shnitzels for lunch.
After lunch, I walked over to Bassia & David's place to try to help them with a computer problem they were having. I was a least partly successful, and I also enjoyed some cake and tea with them.
From there, I walked the back way to the cemetery, where, of course, I visited David's grave, leaving a few stones that I had collected a few weeks ago. Today's pic of the day is a view of the cemetery from the back entrance:
Then I walked down the main road and into town on HaTmarim, where I went to the pharmacy and got the cough syrup that I had forgotten to pick up when I was there yesterday.
I walked home by a very circuitous route, enjoying the end of a beautiful warm day in Eilat. For the entire walk, I wore socks and shoes, long pants (thin corduroy) and a t-shirt, and I was perfectly comfortable.
Before returning home, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a couple of items I had forgotten to get there yesterday.
I taught only 2 units of Berlitz lesson today: 7:00-8:30.
I walked a total of 6.7 kilometers today.

I slept well last night and got up quite late.
David called me and we talked for a little while before my first class.
I taught 8 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:30-11:00, 11:00-12:30, 4:00-5:30, and 6:30-8:00.
After my morning classes, I walked down to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions filled. From there, I went over and had falafel for lunch at a place nearby. Then I walked home the long way. It was beautiful out (as it almost always is here in Eilat!). I wore a light long-sleeve shirt, and it was about right except towards the end, when I felt a little too hot because I was walking mostly in the sun. Just before I started down Argaman St. to return home, I took today's pic of the day:
Before my last class, I walked over to the nearest market to buy a few items.
In the evening, David called me again, and we talked some more.
I walked a total of 5.4 kilometers today.

Tuesday, 3 January 2017
I slept well last night and got up a little early. I also ate breakfast a little early and walked over to WIZO a little early to help set up.
Today, at WIZO we celebrated nearly everyone's birthday (because it had been so long since we had had a birthday celebration). Not quite as many as expected showed up, so there were plenty of bagels, salad, and cake for everyone.
On my way back from WIZO, I started talking with David in Tel Aviv, and we continued talking for some time after I got back, before it was time for him to take his nap.
I taught only 2 units of Berlitz today: 4:00-5:30.
The rest of the day, I did a couple of Hebrew lessons (on Hebrew Podcasts), watched YouTube videos, and played games on my iPad.
I walked a total of 3 kilometers today.

Monday, 2 January 2017
I again slept well last night, and I did not get up early.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:45-11:15, 4:00-5:30, and 6:00-7:30.
After my morning lesson, I took a lovely walk around the big loop. I wore my new shoes (the 2nd pair) for the first time, and they were perfect. I also wore corduroy pants and a long-sleeve shirt (that I bought about 25 years ago). It was sunny with a cool breeze. With parts of my walk in the shade and more parts in the sun, I was completely comfortable the whole way, neither too cold nor too hot. I took a number of pictures, including today's pic of the day, a view of White Mountain from the small park near the highway 12 (dolphin) kikar (which you can also see in the foreground):
After lunch (beets and weenies wrapped in tortillas) I just relaxed, playing games and watching YouTube videos in my comfortable chair.
After my last class, I talked for a while with David in Tel Aviv, telling each other about our day.
I walked a total of 5.7 kilometers today.

Sunday, 1 January 2017
I slept well and got up feeling stronger than I have in several days. After breakfast I walked down for my weekly blood-draw (to check on how the blood thinner is working). Then I walked back home. It was mostly overcast, so I wore a coat with a hood and thereby managed to keep warm. I took today's pic of the day on the way back, a nice view of some red-orange and red bougainvillea mixed together:
After coming back home, I talked for a while with David before going over to an appointment with my doctor. The weather was looking a bit iffy, so I decided to take the bus most of the way. I also took it back afterwards.
In the afternoon, I napped a bit in my chair and I walked to both local grocery stores, the second one because the first had no paper towels.
Our play-reading group was canceled today because Fay, the lady whose house we meet at, was not feeling well.
I video-chatted with David in the evening, using my computer instead of my phone.
I walked a total of 6 kilometers today.
