I got up early again this morning but did not go out for a walk.
I taught 10 units of Berlitz lessons today (including one 2-unit no-show): 10:00-11:30, 12:00-1:30 (the no-show), 2:30-4:00, 4:00-5:30, and 6:30-8:00.
I had vegetarian shnitzel and a salad with added yellow bell pepper, plus some cookies, for lunch at home today.
After lunch, I took a short walk up to the park (Canada Gardens) and sat there on my favorite bench for a while. The wind was blowing, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing. I even recorded a short video to capture the experience (and share it on FB, of course).
I walked less than a kilometer today (I was feeling quite lazy, and I had a lot of teaching somewhat scattered through the day).

Wednesday, 30 March 2016
I again got up very early but didn't go out walking.
I was scheduled to teach 10 units today, but the final 1-unit lesson turned out to be a late cancellation. Fortunately, I was notified about it well in advance, so I didn't have to even enter the classroom. Here was my teaching schedule: 9:15-10:00, 10:00-11:30, 11:30-1:00, 2:45-4:15, 4:30-6:00, and 6:00-6:45.
I had corn on the cob and weenies wrapped in tortillas for lunch at home today.
After lunch, I took a short walk in the park. It was sunny but windy, and the air was quite cool.
After my last class, I put on socks and shoes and a t-shirt (with short pants) and walked down to the mall (Mul HaYam). I walked around a bit there and sat and had a piece of cake and a small coffee at Café Neto. A guy working there remembered me, welcomed me back (in English), and asked about my "friend" (David and I used to go there, but not very often). I had to tell him that David had died last May.
I took a slightly circuitous route back home and just generally really enjoyed this refreshing evening walk.
I walked a total of 7.02 kilometers today.

I got up early this morning (as usual, huh?).
Since I had plenty of time, I left a half-hour early for WIZO and walked up to Harim, over and down on Hagai, and then back on Sheshet HaYamim. It was a lovely walk in the cool morning, with partly cloudy skies and beautiful flowers.
The WIZO meeting itself was also very enjoyable. Our member, Siri (NOT the one on your iPhone!) showed us a picture and told us the story behind it. It's how, when she was 6 years old, she happened to meet then-VP Richard Nixon (who was campaigning to be president in 1959) at the LA airport. And, sure enough, there she is in the picture, standing right in front of him! Quite a story (and also of how she managed to find the picture)!
On the way back, I stopped and bought a few item at the Shufersal near there.
For lunch at home, I had a salad and a couple of vegetarian breasts, on-the-grill style.
I taught 8 units (6 straight hours!) of Berlitz lessons today: 2:30-4:00 (except this one turned out to be a no-show), 4:00-5:30, 5:30-7:00, and 7:00-8:30. That's my complete hours of availability for a Tuesday!
I walked 6.33 kilometers today.

Monday, 28 March 2016
I got up early this morning again. I think I'm pretty much totally adjusted to the new time. Perhaps living in a basement with no windows outside is quite helpful in this respect. I essentially control day and night in my home environment.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today, probably because it's a holiday in most of Europe: 9:30-10:15 and 3:30-5:00. The afternoon lesson was with a student in Japan (no holiday there, I presume) whom I have taught before.
After my first lesson, I walked down to Maccabi. They had called me yesterday evening, while I was out walking, and told me that I could see a urologist at the local hospital instead of having to travel to Tel Aviv. Today, I got the telephone number to call and the form that obligates Maccabi to pay for it. After I got home, I tried to make the appointment but was informed that I can't do it until next week.
For lunch today, I had rice and lentils that I cooked together, and it was very successful. I also had a couple of tomato sandwiches.
During my second lesson, Pascal jumped up onto my desk. I grabbed him to throw him down before he messed up my papers, but his foot got caught on the headset cable. It didn't come unplugged from the computer, but, somehow, it seems to have damaged the audio in port so that my mic quit working. At first, I assumed that it had probably broken a wire in the headset itself, but the problem remained the same with ALL the other headsets I have (3 of them). I ended up finishing the lesson on my Mac, but it, too, was having some problem with the audio in port, so I had to use the built-in microphone. At least I managed to complete the lesson without any problems.
Afterwards, I did some more testing but could not get the mic to work no matter what I tried. So I packed the laptop in my backpack and headed for the computer store next to Il Pentolino. The guy there said the best option would be to get a USB adaptor. One plugs it into a USB port, and then plugs the headset into it, avoiding the built-in audio in port. He didn't have any in stock, though. So I walked up to the other shop, near Maccabi, and they had one. It cost me 60 shekels, which I'm going to try to get Pascal to pay for (ha, Arlan, good luck with that!). :-)
I walked a total of 8.93 kilometers.

Sunday, 27 March 2016
I got up early this morning, but didn't go out until after breakfast.
I walked downtown to the shops on HaTmarim Avenue to find a strainer (I thinks that's what it should be called) so that I could rinse my lentils easily. I found exactly what I wanted, and it wasn't very expensive, either.
I walked home a bit more leisurely, and I also stopped at the supermarket above Rachel Café to get more of the sweetener I use in my coffee. I only just started on my last container of it, but most markets don't carry it, so I try to stay ahead so as not to run out. This particular market, however, seems to stock it quite regularly.
For lunch at home, I had a large salad with half a dark red bell pepper added and some lentils and bread. This was my first time cooking lentils (at least that I can remember!), but I had checked for directions on the web, and they came out pretty good. Next time, though, I'll use a bit less water.
After lunch, I did a little grocery shopping at one of the local markets, and then I proceeded to work on my Machine Learning Foundations class. I solved the software problem by a work-around: I downloaded the things I needed to my PC (instead of my Mac) and managed to get it all to work there. In that way, I was able to do the very simple programming exercises and thereby get the correct answers to this week's quiz questions. What a big relief!
After that, I went out for a long walk. I continued all the way to the end of Sheshet HaYamim Blvd., up the completed part of the Nakhal Garuf tayelet (promenade), then up to the end of Harim Road. I rested there for a bit and petted a lovely, medium-haired calico cat, who just soaked it up. Then I returned back home on Harim Road, stopping a couple times, including a short work-out at the gym. The weather was just perfect -- I walked very comfortably the whole way in sandals, short pants, and a tank top.
I walked a total of 10.68 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 26 March 2016
I got up quite early this morning.
After breakfast, I watched the Beth Chayim Chadashim services from last night.
Later in the morning, I went out for a walk. A few stray drops began falling but not enough to worry about. Finally, when I was sitting in the park, more drops started to fall, so I headed home.
I had a large salad and 3 eggs and rice for lunch at home today. Yum!
In the afternoon, I took another walk. It was always threatening to rain but never quite actually did.
In the evening, I tried to work on my Machine Learning Foundations class, but there is some problem with loading a crucial software library that I have not yet been able to solve. Oh well; tomorrow's another day...
I walked a total of 6.44 kilometers today.

Friday, 25 March 2016
I did NOT get up at all early this morning, both because I was out relatively late last night and because we lost an hour due to going onto summer time. It didn't matter, though. Europe doesn't go onto daylight savings until Saturday night, so my lessons were at their regular times for the students but an hour later for me. In other words, I haven't REALLY lost the hour yet at all.
I went up to the bakery, as usual, and bought challah, hamantashen, and some other cookies before breakfast.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-10:45 and 11:30-1:00.
For lunch, I have weenies wrapped in tortillas, half a melon, and some hamantashen.
In the afternoon, I did the weekly cleaning: dusting, sweeping, taking out the trash and other things for recycling, doing the dishes, and cleaning the bathroom a bit.
As evening was about to descend, I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate challah (giving a small piece to Pascal) to welcome this joyous Shabbat that comes on the heels of Purim.
I walked a total of 2.94 kilometers today.
In honor of Purim, and in light of the modern threats to the Jews and, indeed, to liberal Western civilization, I leave you with this short quote from M'gilat Ester (the Scroll of Esther):

Thursday, 24 March 2016
I got up fairly early again this morning, and I ate breakfast a little early, too.
After breakfast, I went out and walked a little, but it was a bit warm, and there was no breeze, so I didn't go very far. I did sit for a while on my favorite bench in the park, though.
When I came back home, I took some time to cook up a half a cup of rice so that it would be ready for lunch.
I taught 8 units of Berlitz lessons today (except that the first 2-unit student turned out to be a no-show): 12:00-1:30, 2:30-4:00, 4:00-5:30, and 6:00-7:30.
I ate the rice, part of it mixed with Mexican-style beans, and a large salad with added tomato, walnuts, and sunflower seeds for lunch at home today.
In the evening, I went to a Purim party at Fay's house, and it was really fun. I walked down, but some friends gave me a lift back up afterwards.
I walked a total of 4.16 kilometers today.

Wednesday, 23 March 2016
I got up early again this morning, and I ate breakfast quite early, too.
After breakfast, I set out for the Maccabi office, arriving there shortly before they opened at 8:00. It looks like I'll be going to a different hospital (Tel HaShomer) in Tel Aviv, but I don't know any details yet. The lady at Maccabi sent them a fax, and, on my walk back home, I received an SMS from them acknowledging receipt of the request and saying that it would be taken care of as soon as possible. I probably should call them tomorrow to find out what, if anything, has happened regarding it. I'm also still waiting for the report of my CT scan at the local hospital, which I will need to take to the specialists whenever I go there.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-11:30, 11:30-1:00, and 6:00-7:30.
For lunch at home today I had a red bell pepper, a tomato, 2 vegetarian shnitzels, and 3 cookies.
In the afternoon, I took a lovely walk. By then, the sky had become overcast so it was very pleasant to walk everywhere. I first went up to the outdoor gym and worked out a bit there, then continued over across Nakhal Shakahmon and down Haggai Road, returning via Sheshet HaYamim Blvd. Along the way, I photographed a number of beautiful flowers and later posted them on Facebook.
I walked a total of 8.53 kilometers today.

Tuesday, 22 March 2016
I woke up and got up quite early again this morning. I also ate breakfast a bit early.
I set out just before 9:00 a.m. for the hospital to see if I could get the results of my CT scan (2 weeks ago) but they were still not available.
Then I walked over to the weekly English speakers' meeting at WIZO. Today, we had a mini Purim celebration, and we also celebrated the 91st birthday of one of our members, Gladys, a lovely American woman who has been living in Eilat for many years now.
After the WIZO meeting, I walked down to the main Maccabi office for my appointment with the urologist. There is now no doubt that I have a cancerous tumor in my prostate gland; the only remaining question is what the treatment should be. He is referring me to specialists at another hospital in Tel Aviv who specialize in precisely this problem. They will be the ones to decide if I should undergo surgery or radiation treatment (which are the 2 possibilities). So, tomorrow or the next day, I'll try to get in to the Maccabi office to find out how to set up the appointment there, and then I can arrange everything.
Following the appointment, I walked on over to Mercaz Big again. I had bought new sunglasses (to go over my regular glasses) at the SuperPharm there yesterday, but they hadn't had an appropriate case to give me for them, which is included. Today, they had called me to let me know it was available, so I went and picked it up. Then I had falafel for lunch at the shwarma/falafel place there.
Since I was already in that area, I walked up the street to the Breishit health food store and bought two containers of the carob/peanut spread that they often sell there, and which I LOVE.
Then I headed on home, stopping 2 or 3 times to rest on the way.
I taught only 4 units of Berlitz lessons today: 4:00-5:30 and 7:00-8:30, although the second 2-unit lesson turned out to be a no-show.
I walked a total of 9.93 kilometers today.

Monday, 21 March 2016
I woke up and got up quite early this morning, feeling really great.
I taught only 6 units of Berlitz lesson today: 9:30-11:00, 5:00-6:30, and 6:30-8:00.
I did a load of laundry during my first class, and some of it is still drying on the rack in the corridor in front of my apartment.
After my first class, I took Goldfinger, my snake, out for a nice walk. First, we went over to Canada Gardens and sat for a while on my favorite bench in the shade there. He was quite content sitting on my lap. Then we went up to the outdoor gym. I didn't work out because I was holding him, but we sat there for a short time. After that, I walked over to Yahel Road and eventually wandered back homeward through the Tze'elim neighborhood. Mostly, Goldfinger seemed pretty content to just stay wrapped around my wrist, taking in the scenery. I must take him out more often like that.
I had veggie burger cheese sandwiches and a large salad for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon, I went for another, longer walk by myself, enjoying the beautiful weather.
In the evening, I chatted a little on Facebook with my Palestinian friend, whom I met during my last visit to the Assuta Hospital in Tel Aviv.
I walked a total of 5.8 kilometers today.

Sunday, 20 March 2016
I got up very early but didn't go out for a walk because I knew I'd be walking a lot later.
After breakfast, I set out for town. The first stop was the bank, where I needed to transfer some money. Then I walked over to Mercaz Big. I needed to go to the SuperPharm there because it's the only place I know of to get the large dark glasses that can be worn OVER my regular glasses. I somehow lost the pair I had, and, besides, its lenses had gotten rather scratched and so were nearing the end of their useful life. It made for a long walk, and it was a bit warm out, but at least I got everything done that I planned to do. I even stopped briefly at the Zebra pet store to let them know I'll be needing more mice for Goldfinger (my snake) soon.
I had a tomato, corn on the cob, and cheese wrapped in a whole-wheat tortilla and toasted a bit for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon, I began watching the videos for the second week of my machine learning class. I'm really enjoying it!
In the evening, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out a bit, just after the sun went behind the hills. It was actually a bit chilly, although I was comfortable with flip-flops, short pants, and a tank top (yeah, I know, we're really spoiled here in Eilat!).
I walked a total of 11.53 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 19 March 2016
I woke up and got up early this morning but didn't go out for a walk.
After breakfast, I watched last night's services from BCC and also the discussion afterwards with a major from the IDF.
For lunch, I had a large salad with added tomato, and freshly-cooked basmati rice. Part of the rice I ate plain, and the rest I added to 3 scrambled eggs for a delicious omelet.
After lunch, I took a short nap, something I very rarely do. It was just right!
Then I talked to David's sister in Ohio for more than an hour, just chit-chatting and enjoying catching up.
In the early evening, I went for a long walk over to Shakhamon via Sheshet HaYamim Blvd. Then I walked up Ein Yahav, past where I used to live, and returned home via Harim Road. I had found that the problem with the earbuds I bought yesterday with due to the case, not the earbuds themselves. So, I switched back to my original case and listened to music throughout my entire walk: Korngold's gorgeous violin concerto, some piano music by Albéniz, Prokofiev's 6th piano sonata (very pianistic sonority), and John Rutter's Gloria.
A little later, I made took short walks to both of the local markets to buy a few items.
I walked a total of 7.79 kilometers today.

Friday, 18 March 2016
I got up early this morning but didn't go out for a walk except for the quick trip up to buy challah at the bakery.
After breakfast, though, I walked into town to buy new earbuds for my iPhone since I had somehow managed to lose the ones the came with it during the move. It's nice to really be able to listen to my music again. On the way back, I tried them out but discovered that the pause and volume control buttons don't work. So I'm planning to take them back and complain about that on Sunday.
I did the weekly cleaning tasks today.
I had a salad, weenies wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas, and granola cookies for lunch at home today.
I started a new Coursera course today, offered by the University of Washington, called "Machine Learning Foundations: A Case Study Approach". It's actually the first of a series of courses constituting a specialization on machine learning. I hope, in fact, to complete the entire specialization. So far, it looks very interesting!
In the later afternoon, I went out for another walk, just to enjoy the beautiful day.
As the sunlight was about to fade, I lit candles, drank a bit of sweet red wine, and ate a little challah to welcome the Shabbat queen.
I walked a total of 8.01 kilometers today.
I leave you with this quote from Genesis 2, verse 7:

And the Eternal God formed the human, dust from the ground, and breathed into his nose a breath of life, and the human became a living being.
[Note: there's a play on words in this verse. The word for "the human" האדם is the same as the word for "the ground" האדמה, except that the former lacks the final letter ה. We are truly children of the earth!]

Thursday, 17 March 2016
I woke up early, got up early, and went out for a great walk this morning, going all the way to the southwest end of Harim Road and back. It was quite cool out, but I nevertheless wore only short pants, a t-shirt, and socks and shoes.
I taught 9 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-11:30, 12:00-1:30, 2:45-3:30, 4:00-5:30, and 6:00-7:30.
I had to veggie burger sandwiches with tomato and mayonnaise, and half a bar of white chocolate, for lunch at home today.
I walked a total of 4.66 kilometers today, almost of all of it on that one early-morning walk.

Wednesday, 16 March 2016
I slept slightly weirdly last night and felt really tired in the morning, so I didn't get up until quite late.
I taught 7 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:15-10:00, 11:30-1:00, 4:30-6:00, and 6:00-7:30.
During the morning break, I did a bit of grocery shopping at the nearest local market.
I had vegan shnitzel, a large salad (with greens, a quarter of a deep red bell pepper, and a large tomato), and some cookies for lunch at home.
After lunch, I went for a walk, stopping 2 or 3 times to rest and just enjoy the perfect weather.
I walked a total of only 2.95 kilometers today.

Tuesday, 15 March 2016
I slept well and woke up fairly early. I got up but didn't go for an early-morning walk. I DID do a "Learn to Speak Hebrew" lesson that I hadn't yet done, though.
As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed today's English speakers' meeting at WIZO.
I ate a tomato, a quarter of a large red bell pepper, 2 mini veggie burger and cheese sandwiches, and some cookies for lunch at home today.
I taught 5 units of Berlitz lessons today: 2:45-3:30, 4:00-5:30, and 5:30-7:00. In fact, I had somehow missed getting that first lesson onto my schedule and thus didn't know about it until the office called me for not being in it. Luckily, I was at home, so I immediately started my computer and got in as fast as I could, and the lesson went quite well. However, it will be a big black mark against me with Berlitz, of course.
I walked a total of 3.13 kilometers today.

I woke up and got up early this morning but didn't go out for a walk, saving that, instead, for much later.
I taught only one 2-unit Berlitz class today: 9:30-11:00.
I had a salad, weenies wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas, and some cookies for lunch at home today.
In the late afternoon (beginning at about 3:35), I set out for a walk. First, I went to the bank to deposit a check, then I walked up to the end of HaTmarim and from there out to the cemetery, where I visited David's grave. I put 5 small stones on his tombstone, each of a different color, that I had collected some weeks ago in lower Nakhal Shakhamon for that purpose. I returned to the city by a shortcut from the top end of the cemetery and over a small pass on a dirt road. Then I walked to the outdoor gym, where I worked out a bit before coming back home.
I walked a total of 8.26 kilometers today.

I got up early this morning but didn't go out for a walk then. I did eat breakfast a little early, though.
A friend came over this morning, and we spent some nice time together.
For lunch at home, I had corn on the cob, mixed beans (brown in Mexican sauce and white in tomato sauce), and oznei haman (hamantashen, "Haman's ears" -- traditional triangular cookies for Purim).
After lunch, I did a little grocery shopping at one of the local markets (the one by Ganei Kanada).
In the late afternoon, I went for a fairly long walk, including a stop at the Shufersal on Y'rushalayim HaShlemah St. to pick up a few additional items.
I walked a total of 6.58 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 12 March 2016
I woke up early but didn't go out for a walk because I knew I'd be doing plenty of walking later. I did eat breakfast early, though.
In the morning I watched the BCC (Beth Chayim Chadashim) services from last night.
I had a lovely lunch and interesting conversation with Bassia and David. The weather was just perfect to sit and enjoy on their 4th-floor balcony.
In the early evening, I walked down to Fay's for her book night. Many of the books there were books that I had donated, and I was delighted to see that people were taking them. I also enjoyed a number of interesting conversations with several people, including some I had never met before.
Afterwards, I walked over to the musical fountains, took a short video of them in action, and listened to a bit of the celebration of the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Eilat, including part of the mayor's speech, which I understood moderately well. Then I walked back home.
I walked a total of 8.4 kilometers today.

Having gotten to bed quite late last night, I was not surprised that I woke up and got up quite late this morning. But I was well-rested and ready for the day. Before breakfast, I took my usual short walk up to the bakery to buy challah for Shabbat.
I taught 4 units of Berlitz lessons today (both students were ones I had never taught before): 9:00-10:30 and 10:30-12:00.
I had a large salad for lunch at home today. After that, I walked over to the appointment with my psychiatrist. Luckily, he had called me a little earlier to let me know that the Shakhamon Maccabi office has moved. I had previously seen that a Maccabi office was planned there, but I didn't know whether it was to be a totally new one or just the new location for the old one. Apparently, it's the latter, and now they have moved there. Unfortunately, it's a longer walk from my new place (my old place is about half-way between the 2 locations, but perhaps a little closer to the new one). Anyway, I managed to walk over there and arrive on time, and the appointment went very well. He gave me some important advice which I intend to follow.
Although I spread it out a bit, I managed to complete my weekly cleaning chores satisfactorily, so the new habit is getting more and more established.
As the sun was shining its last for the day on our beautiful valley, I lit candles, drank of bit of sweet red wine, and ate a little challah to welcome another Shabbat of peace and rest.
I walked a total of 5.64 kilometers today, most of that being the walk to my appointment and back.
In honor of the beginning of the month of Adar II, I leave you with this:

Thursday, 10 March 2016
I got up at about 5:00 this morning and was out of here and walking to the airport by 6:30, having already eaten a good breakfast.
My flight to Tel Aviv took off precisely at 8:00, just as scheduled, and at about 8:45, I started my walk from the Sde Dov airport in Tel Aviv to the Assuta Hospital. I arrived there at about 10:20 or so. I had stopped to rest 2 or 3 times on the way and also bought a soda at a gas station.
The first thing the doctor did was to inject some kind of contrasting substance into my vein (probably a radioactive isotope of iodine). Then she told me I was free to go out and do whatever I wanted until 1:15. She also said I should drink 5 cups of water during that time. So most of the time I just sat and relaxed, but I also walked over to a Landwer Café close to the hospital and had their delicious buckwheat mixture, with yams, carrots, mushrooms, and cubes of tofu.
The machine they use in the procedure looks something like the CT scanner: a big vertical donut with a narrow bed that can slide back and forth through it. But this one had 2 large parts attached that moved close to my body and slowly scanned it from different angles. It took about 10 minutes. Presumably, I glowed well for it!
They told me the disk would be ready in about 40 minutes, so I sat in the waiting room to wait for it. While I was sitting there, I saw an Arab man not far away and smiled at him. He immediately smiled back, a nice warm smile, and came over to shake my hand and sit beside me. I found out that he teaches English to school children in Bethlehem, where he lives. His wife teaches math. He was there with his 16-year-old daughter (who was sitting close to me, looking a bit shy and wearing a nice hijab). She has lymphoma. The man and I chatted a little until my disk was ready. He told me that he prays that Allah will heal me, which I found very touching.
For the walk back, I took a slightly longer router, going through the heart of HaYarkon Park. It was really beautiful, definitely the scenic route! I stopped and rested multiple times and took a number of pictures, too.
I got to the airport WAY early, hoping to catch an earlier flight home. But it didn't happen, so I just flew back on the originally booked flight, which didn't leave Tel Aviv until 8:55. After arriving back in Eilat, I walked home.
I broke my previous record for kilometers walked in one day by quite a bit. Today, I walked a grand total of 20.83 kilometers!

I woke up and got up early this morning but decided not to go out for a walk.
I taught 10 units (7.5 hours) of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-11:30, 11:30-1:00, 2:45-4:15, 4:30-6:00, and 6:00-7:30.
I did a quite walk to the nearest market for a few items before lunch at home today, which consisted of 3 scrambled eggs, toast, a couple of small cucumbers, hamentashen, and white chocolate.

Tuesday, 8 March 2016
I again woke up and got up quite early this morning, well-rested.
I had to eat breakfast slightly earlier than usual because I was required to fast after 7:30.
My appointment was at 11:30 at the local hospital for my CT scan (of my abdominal area). I arrived early, but, before they could do the actual scan, I had to drink 9 cups of their solution containing contrasting agent (probably mostly iodine), one every 15 minutes. So, they couldn't start the actual CT until about 2:00. During the scan, they were giving me more contrasting agent intravenously. Afterwards, I waited around for about half an hour to receive disks with the images. The complete results, however, will not be available for about 2 weeks, but I'll be able to view and print them online with a password they gave me.
I got back home a little after 3:00, leaving me plenty of time for tomato-and-cheese sandwiches for lunch before my one 2-unit Berlitz lesson, 4:00-5:30.
After the lesson, I took a walk around town a bit in the lovely evening air. I wore a t-shirt and wasn't too hot, but I probably could also have been very comfortable in a tank top.
I walked a total of 6.82 kilometers today.

I got up early this morning well-rested but didn't go out for a walk.
I taught 8 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:30-11:00, 12:00-1:30, 3:00-4:30, and 7:00-8:30.
I walked a little bit but most rested in the park after my first lesson.
I had a large salad with salad greens including spinach leaves, plus weenies wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas, for lunch at home today.
Before my last class, I took a medium-length walk even though I had little energy.
I walked a total of 5.03 kilometers today.

Sunday, 6 March 2016
I slept well last night and got up fairly early this morning.
The first order of business for the day was a walk to the Maccabi pharmacy to get my monthly prescriptions filled and then to the bank to withdraw money to pay my rent. After that, I walked back home.
Me'ir invited me for lunch today, and he paid for the lunch and for the taxi rides down to the Club Hotel (where we ate) and back. Both of us just had salads, but it was delicious, and it was nice to be treated.
In the evening, I went for another fairly long walk and also worked out at the outdoor gym.
I walked a total of 12.59 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 5 March 2016
I slept a little bit fitfully last night and got up quite late. But I felt reasonably rested.
I talked again this morning with Me'ir on the phone and invited him to walk with me in the park a little. He wanted me to come up to his place first, but I refused and told him to call me when he was ready to go out. He never did, though. I tried to call him 2 or 3 times but got no answer. So, I just walked and rested in the park and at the outdoor gym by myself.
For lunch at home, I had corn on the cob, shakshuka with 3 eggs, and a Moroccan cookie. It was ALL delicious!
I talked to David's sister in Ohio at the regular time today, and she is gradually getting her strength back.
In the evening, I took a nice long walk all the way to the end of Harim Road and back.
I walked a total of 9.18 kilometers today.

Friday, 4 March 2016
I slept very well, woke up early, and got up slowly. But I didn't go out for an early-morning walk except for the really short trip up to the bakery to buy challah.
I taught 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45 and 10:00-11:30.
After my class, I headed down to the post office in Mercaz Mor to mail a letter.
For lunch at home, I had a large salad with an added tomato, two sandwiches with mini veggie burgers, and a Moroccan cookie (they're my new guilty pleasure!).
In the late afternoon, just before candle-lighting time, I took a walk over to Shakhamon on Sheshet HaYamim, then walked up the green strip there and came back home via Harim Road.
By then, it was time, so I lit candles, drank a little sweet red wine, and ate some challah to welcome the Shabbat.
In the evening, Me'ir responded to a short message I had sent him, and we talked on the phone for a while. I'm being very careful about getting reconnected to him, but I think it will basically be a good thing.
I leave you this evening with a couple of verses from Psalm 145. This psalm is also part of the Shabbat morning prayers. When I was accompanying the chorale in high school, they sang a beautiful a capella choral arrangement of these verses, in the King James translation. Here they are, both in the original Hebrew and as used in that version:

עיני-כל אליך ישברו ואתה נותן-להם את-אכלם בעתו
פותח את-ידך ומשביע לכל-חי רצון
The eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou givest them their meat in due season.
Thou openest thy hand and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

I got up a little late this morning but well-rested.
After breakfast, I called the Assuta Hospital in Tel Aviv and got an appointment for the isotope test a week from today. Then I called Arkia Airlines and ordered my flights up and back (which Maccabi, my HMO, will pay for). Arkia gave me an order number which I e-mailed to the local Maccabi office. All of this was done completely in Hebrew. The final task was to write to Berlitz about the need for a sick day. That, of course, I did in English!
In the late morning, I went for a walk in several of the areas north of where I live.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 12:00-1:30, 3:00-4:30, and 6:00-7:30.
I had a quarter of a large red bell pepper, 2 cheese-and-tomato sandwiches, and a delicious Moroccan cookie (drenched in honey) for lunch at home today.
After lunch, I made a quick shopping trips to both of the 2 nearest supermarkets.
Before my last lesson, I took another walk, stopping to work out a little at the gym and then continuing a short distance up Nakhal Shakhamon.
I walked a total of 7.58 kilometers today.

I woke up and got up early this morning. I also ate breakfast early because I needed to head down to Maccabi for my blood tests (for which I did NOT need to be fasting). They never have any trouble finding a good vein on me (unlike on David, where it was always a nightmare for the poor person trying to draw blood or start an IV). This time, I saw the needle go in but didn't feel even a slight pain! Afterwards, I made the necessary arrangements at the Maccabi office for the test that I'll have to travel to Tel Aviv for. I still need to call the Assuta Hospital there to schedule the appointment, after which I'll call the airline to arrange the flights.
I taught 9 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:15-10:00, 11:30-1:00, 2:45-4:15, 4:30-6:00, and 6:00-7:30.
After my first class, I went out for a short walk and work-out at the gym. Along the way, I also happened to run into my friend, Isobel, who lives near me, and walked for a bit with her.
I had beans (mixed white beans in tomato sauce and brown beans in Mexican sauce) and little weenies, plus a big salad for lunch at home today.
I walked a total of 6.3 kilometers today.

I got up quite early this morning but didn't go out for a walk since I knew I'd be walking later.
At this week's WIZO meeting we continued sharing stories about our families. I told about my Mom going back to grad school when I was a kid and showed her thesis, which I still have. Then I showed them a beautiful afghan that my Dad knitted when I was a baby (or maybe even before I was born) while he was working as a special duty nurse.
After WIZO I walked down to Maccabi for an appointment with my urologist to receive the results from my prostate ultrasound and biopsy that was done about 3 weeks ago. I asked him if it was cancer, and he answered that he thought so, and he ordered some additional tests for more information. So, tomorrow I go in for a blood test, next Tuesday I go to the local hospital for a CT scan, and at some time as yet unscheduled I go back to Tel Aviv for some kind of a radioisotope exam. Then, the urologist will decided what the next steps should be.
Then I walked back home and had cheese and tomato sandwiches and a large salad.
In the early evening I took a short walk and enjoyed the coolness of the evening after a rather warm day. Later on, I listened to a program on the internet radio station Radio Hof Eilat featuring my friends David and Bassia Bar-Chai.
