I woke up and got up early this morning. After spending a little time sitting with Pascal out by the gate, I sent him back into the apartment and went out for a nice morning walk. The breeze was absolutely delightful! Of course I took a number of pictures. Today's pic of the day is one of them, a silhouette of buildings, palm trees, and the Jordanian mountains shortly before sunrise:
I also enjoyed the walk to WIZO. Although by that time it was mostly sunny, the air was still cool and moving nicely. Sharona did a nice presentation with plenty of illustrative videos on Motown music, and I enjoyed it very much.
After WIZO I walked down to the Maccabi office for my appointment with my urologist. He ordered the ultrasound for me that the oncologist wants, but he said I have to see to family doctor to get the order for the MRI.
I caught the bus back home to avoid walking too much in the bright sun in the middle of the day. Then I made an appointment to see my family doctor next Sunday and to undergo the ultrasound next Tuesday.
I had beans and weenies and a large salad with tomato and bell pepper for lunch at home today.
I taught 5 units of Berlitz lessons today, the last one (2 units) being one that will be observed: 2:45-3:30, 4:00-5:30, and 7:00-8:30.
I walked a total of 5.23 kilometers today.

Monday, 30 May 2016
I slept well last night but got up quite late.
Today's pic of the day is actually one I took yesterday morning during my early-morning walk, a glimpse of White Mountain:
I was scheduled to teach 9 units of Berlitz lessons today, but one 2-unit lesson turned out to be a no-show: 9:00-9:45, 9:45-11:15 (the no-show), 11:30-1:00, 5:00-6:30, and 7:00-8:30.
I made a quick trip to the market for some groceries today.
For lunch at home, I had a large salad, with added bell pepper and tomato, and vegetarian "chicken" breasts wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas.
I watch several of the lecture videos from week 5 of my online regression course. We're getting into some really interesting stuff now, and the teachers are excellent.
I walked just 0.53 km today.

Sunday, 29 May 2016
I woke up early this morning and managed to pull myself out for a walk. I was only mildly enthusiastic about it. I decided, for no particular reason, to walk over to HaSporta'im Road, coming out there just below the gas station. Then I walked up to Harim. As I was walking along, I noticed that the view of Har Shlomo was quite nice, but it would be better the other side of the road without the power lines in the line-of-sight. So I crossed over. It was at the point where there's a dirt road going into the desert, and there was a mound nearby which promised an even better angle. When I got up on the mound, I got the picture I wanted, but I also noticed that the sun was close to rising, so I took soon photos in that direction, as well.
Then I decided it would be fun to walk up the dirt road, which I had never followed any distance before. Now I was beginning to really enjoy my walk. It got even more fun as I continued, because I found that I could keep taking more and more pictures of the sun rising from behind LOTS of different hills, some quite close, and others further away. This continued even when I turned around and started back down the road. In fact, I even took some photos of the sun behind a building and behind a couple of palm trees when I got near home. In all, I got more than 30 photographs of the rising sun from at least 15 or 20 different locations, all in the same morning. It was so much fun! It was so serendipitous that I just happened to be in exactly the right places and exactly the right times. So, of course, today's pic of the day will be one of these sunrise pics:
The rest of the morning, I was fairly lazy, although I did spend some time cropping pictures and posting them to Facebook.
For lunch, I had a big salad and weenies wrapped in tortillas.
In the afternoon, I did the second programming assignment for week 4 of my regression class and finally managed to pass the quiz based on it. The final error that I had to weed out involved a place in a subroutine I had written where I had accidentally type the number "1" instead of the letter "i". It's lucky that I managed to find that one before giving up!
In the evening, I walked down to Fay's house to join our weekly play reading group. This week we started reading "Spoon River Anthology", and it's really good. I think all of us had a good time reading it.
I walked a total of 6.65 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 28 May 2016
My sleep was a little bit spotty last night, and I got up quite late and stiff. I only went out in the morning to feed my friend's cats.
I spent most of the morning working on the first programming exercise for my regression class. I didn't have too much trouble, and I did everything successfully, getting 100% on the quiz based on it.
For lunch, I had shakshuka over rice, which was actually very tasty.
I talked with David's sister in Ohio, as I usually do on Shabbat afternoons. Then I went over to feed my friend's cats and take care of them generally. They were ALL very happy to see me, and I took some more cute pictures, too. One of them is today's pic of the day:
After I finished there, I walked down to Sheshet HaYamim Avenue and followed it all the way over to Ein Yahav, the street I used to live on, taking several nice shots of the Gulf and Aqaba on the way, including this bonus pic, taken from the Sheshet HaYamim bridge over Nakhal Shakhamon:
I then walked up Ein Yahav right past my old place to Harim Road, and walked back home that way.
I walked a total of 5.98 kilometers today.

Friday, 27 May 2016
I got up a little late this morning, feeling stiff. I didn't go out for a walk, but I did go up and buy challah (and some cookies) for Shabbat, and I also went out and fed my friend's cats.
I was scheduled to teach 5 units of Berlitz lessons today, but the first class (1 unit) was a no-show, which the students had told me at the last lesson that they would cancel, but apparently they forgot: 9:00-9:45, 9:45-11:15, and 11:30-1:00.
I had a salad with added tomato and chopped up vegetarian "breasts" with sweet chili sauce as dressing for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon, I watched more videos from week 4 of my online regression class and passed the first quiz.
In the late afternoon, I went out for a walk, ending up at my friend's place to feed her cats for the evening. Today's pic of the day is of 2 of her very cute kittens:
As the light was about to fade from our beautiful valley, bringing another day to a close, I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate a little challah to welcome the arriving Shabbat.
I walked a total of 5.78 kilometers today.
I leave you today with this verse from the 2nd chapter of Breishit (Genesis 2:17):

Thursday, 26 May 2016
I woke up and got up early this morning and went for a wonderful, long morning walk. I took a number of pictures along the way, including today's pic of the day, the skyline of the Jordanian mountains just before the sun come up over them:
I taught 7 units of Berlitz lessons today (although the last one actually turned out to be a no-show): 10:00-11:30, 2:45-3:30, 4:00-5:30, and 7:00-8:30. The 4:00 lesson was my first time teaching from the new materials for levels 5 through 8 that Berlitz is just introducing. It went reasonably well, I think.
I had a big salad with several additions and "quesadillas" (cheese toasted in whole-wheat tortillas) for lunch at home today.
In the evening, I went over to take care of a friend's cats. I'm feeding them, giving them fresh water, and changing their boxes while she's gone for a long weekend.

I woke up fairly early this morning, but I just relaxed for a while and didn't actually get out of bed until quite late.
I was scheduled to teach 6 units of Berlitz lessons today, but one 1-unit lesson turned out to be a late cancellation: 9:15-10:00, 10:00-10:45 (the cancellation), 2:45-4:15, and 7:00-8:30.
After the first lesson, I took a short walk. It was beginning to get quite warm, and there was limited shade, so I didn't stay out for long. I took several pictures, though, including today's pic of the day, a lovely view of Canada Gardens:
I started watching the video lectures for week 4 of my online regression class. It's getting quite interesting.
I had a large salad with an added tomato and rice mixed with Mexican style beans for lunch at home today.
Before my evening class, I went out for quite a long walk. By that late in the day, it was easy to stay in the shade most of the time.
I walked a total of 6.5 kilometers today.

I got up late this morning, but I had dreamt a lot and felt rested.
We were treated to another of Terry's lovely saxophone recitals at this week's WIZO meeting. At 91, he's still going strong!
After the meeting, I enjoyed walking home with Isobel, including stops at a bakery and a couple of supermarkets.
I had veggie burger, cheese, and tomato sandwiches for lunch at home today.
I taught 5 units of Berlitz lessons today: 2:45-3:30, 4:30-6:00, and 7:00-8:30.
Before my last lesson, I went out for a short walk in the neighborhood. I took today's pic of the day, a view of a walkway between "patio apartments". This is an interesting style of housing that's found in many parts of Eilat. The buildings are only 1 story, with flat roofs, and there are only windows at the very top, and sometimes none at all. However, the apartments have small courtyards and actually often seem quite attractive, especially to people raising children. Often, the parking is not right adjacent the apartment, but it's never excessively far away. I've never actually been INSIDE any of them, however. So, here's the pic:
I walked a total of 4.87 kilometers today.

I got up a little late again this morning, having not gotten to bed very early last night.
I was scheduled to teach 7 units today, but I ended up teaching 9 because I accepted an extra 2-unit lesson: 9:00-9:45, 11:00-12:30 (it was actually supposed to be 11:30-1:00, but both the student, a young female German physician, and I got confused and came into the classroom a half-hour early -- we both have Ph.D.; could that be our problem?!?), 2:30-4:00, 5:00-6:30 (the added lesson I accepted), and 7:00-8:30.
I went to the nearest market (Elimelech Market) to buy a few things I needed this morning. I also went for a very short walk in the park. While I was there, I took a picture of a beautiful small yellow flower, which is today's pic of the day:
I did a load of laundry before lunch and hung it out in the corridor after lunch. When I checked after my last class, everything was completely dry, so I folded it all and put it away.
I had a big salad, with added yellow bell pepper and tomato, and weenies wrapped in tortillas for lunch at home today.
I walked only 1.36 kilometers today.

Sunday, 22 May 2016
Of course I got up late this morning, having gotten to bed really late last night. But I was well-rested and had a great day.
In the morning, I played the harpsichord and piano for some time and spent even more going through a couple of books of songs I have, picking out ones I might work up a bit. One book is of favorite American songs through its history, and the other is of Israeli and Jewish favorites. Now I have many possibilities, and I'll work on many more than I'll actually need and decide later which ones, exactly, I will choose to play at WIZO. Perhaps I'll even play more than once, with different themes.
I had rice, 3 eggs, and some shakshuka mix, all cooked together, for a very delicious lunch at home today.
I went over to Isobel's house in the early evening to learn about feeding her cats, which I'll be doing for her while she's away next weekend. She has 1 indoor cat and a whole multi-generational bevy of outdoor cats that she's feeding. They're really cute. After we went through the procedure of feeding them, Isobel and I sat and chatted for a while, which was very enjoyable.
A little later, I walked down to Fay's house for our weekly play-reading get-together. We finished the play that we started last week and again had a very lovely time. On the walk down, I took several pictures of signs in Hebrew. One of them is today's pic of the day -- do you know what it says?
I walked a total of 3.76 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 22 May 2016
I got up late this morning since I was out a bit late last night.
I had a little trouble getting myself motivated, but I managed to finish week 3 of my regression class. I ran into some frustrating technical problems with the software, but I was eventually able to work around them and felt very successful in the end.
I had vegetarian "breast" sandwiches with tomato and barbecue sauce, plus 4 small cookies for dessert, for lunch at home.
I talked to David's sister in Ohio in the late afternoon.
In the evening, I took a long walk down the hill, eventually walking on the North Beach. I took quite a few pictures, and I plan to post more of them on Facebook tomorrow. Today's pic of the day is this photo showing something that I think is called "Sdom apples", together with flowers at the same time on the same plant. They're about the size of grapefruits, but they're actually almost completely EMPTY inside, making them very light-weight. I don't know if there's even anything edible in them at all:
At about 8:30, I met some friends at 9 Beach, where we sat around half the night chatting, drinking a bit (I had a piña colada, something I've hadn't had in MANY years), and celebrating Deborah's birthday. She's the one who graciously hosted me at her seder this year. We sat on the beach only a few meters from the water, with a view all the way to Hakl, Saudi Arabia, and the weather was absolutely perfect out. Such an enjoyable evening!
I walked a total of a little over 6 kilometers today.

I got up late this morning and so only walked up to buy challah (and some cookies) at the bakery before breakfast.
I was scheduled to teach 3 units of Berlitz lessons today, but the second lesson, 1 unit, turned out to be a no-show: 10:00-11:30 and 12:00-12:45.
I did the weekly household cleaning tasks today.
For lunch, I had corn on the cob, a tomato, a cucumber, quesadillas (cheese in tortillas), and 4 small cookies.
I lit candles, drank sweet red wine, and at a little challah a bit early this evening, and then I walked down to Fay's house, where I had been invited for Friday night dinner. I took several photos on my way down, just before the sun went off the Jordanian mountains. One of them is today's pic of the day:
I really enjoyed the dinner and, especially, the other people who were there at Fay's house.
Some other guests gave me a ride home, so I only walked a total of 2.95 kilometers today.

I had a large salad, with an added tomato and sunflower seeds, and beans and weenies for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon I walked down to Mall HaYam, walked around in the mall for a while, then walked over to the SuperPharm on HaTmarim (to get my favorite toothpaste), and then back home, stopping several times along the way to rest. It was warm but not too hot hot, and I was able to walk mostly in the shade, especially on the way back. Today's pic of the day is a view of the North Beach from the upper level of the mall:

I got up fairly early this morning, but I just didn't quite feel like going out for a walk. I did take some time, though, to watch more lectures from my online class in regression and to pass the first quiz for this week.
After breakfast, I walked down to the nearest market to buy a few more items I needed.
I was scheduled to teach 6 units of Berlitz lessons today, but the middle 2-unit one turned out to be a late cancellation, which I found out about just before its start time: 10:30-12:00, 2:45-4:15, and 5:30-7:00.
I had a cucumber, shakshuka (with 2 eggs, plus half a yellow bell pepper and some olive pieces added), and some ice cream for lunch at home today.
My oncologist called today. He had promised to bring up my case at their regular staff meeting, and he is recommending that I undergo an MRI to see if the cancer is confined to my prostate or not. If it's not, then radiation is almost certainly the best option. My urologist here, though, will have to order the MRI. The oncologist will send me a letter about it via e-mail.
In the evening, after my last class, I went out for a medium-length walk. The weather today was cooler than yesterday.
Today, I'm putting up TWO pics of the day, both "portraits" of Pascal. In the first, he was sitting on my lap. In the second, he was lying on the piano near me:
I walked a total of 3.54 kilometers today.
After breakfast, I walked down to the nearest market to buy a few more items I needed.

I got up early this morning. First, I let Pascal go outside for a while and sat there with him (he is NEVER allowed out by himself!). Then, I made him go back inside and I went out for a walk for nearly an hour. I snapped several pictures, including today's pic of the day, the sun rising over the Jordanian mountains:
I took the bus both to and from today's English speakers' meeting at WIZO because of the heat. The program was given by one of our members, telling us about a couple of very interesting exhibits currently at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. One of them is all about accumulating evidence of the Egyptian presence in Canaan (roughly, today's Israel) in ancient times. The other is about the Roman emperor, Hadrian.
After the meeting, I walked the short distance up to the Shufersal near WIZO and bought a few items before returning home (by bus).
I had 4 whole beets and 2 sandwiches with veggie burgers, cheese, tomato, Dijon mustard, and mayonnaise for lunch at home today.
I taught 7 units of Berlitz lessons: 2:45-3:30, 3:30-5:00, 5:00-6:30, and 7:00-8:30.
I walked a total of 5.02 kilometers today.

Monday, 16 May 2016
Having gone to bed a bit late last night, I also got up late this morning.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today, probably mostly due to the Pentecost holiday in most of Europe today: 9:00-9:45 (a Polish group) and 7:00-8:30 (a German-speaking Swiss student who will soon be moving to Australia for his work).
After my morning class, I took the bus down to buy most cat food for Pascal, and I also came back by bus. It was MUCH too hot today to walk very far at all, especially in the sun.
I watched video lectures for week 3 of my online class on regression. They're really getting into the nuts and bolts of it all now, and it's quite interesting.
I also began playing some music on the harpsichord and piano (well, it's actually just one instrument, but that's another advantage of the electronic version). I'm going to start practicing to improve the accuracy of my playing in preparation to do a recital for WIZO, probably after the summer.
Before my evening lesson, I walked up to the 2nd nearest market to do some grocery shopping. I had some items that I really needed to get.
Just before my evening lesson, I snapped today's pic of the day, Pascal relaxing on the table in front of the microwave and next to my desk. You can see part of the screen of my computer all ready to begin the lesson. In fact, he actually got up and let before the lesson began:
I walked a total of only 1.46 kilometers today.

Sunday, 15 May 2016
Today was a long day. I got up early, ate breakfast very early, and was out of the house and walking to the airport by about 6:40. My flight was scheduled to depart at 8:00, but it ended up getting delayed a little because the plane we were to fly on was delayed in arriving in Eilat.
When I got to Tel Aviv, I used the Gett app to order a taxi to take me to Sourasky Hospital. It cost me a little more than 40 shekels, but the driver got me to the right building. Once I was inside, I managed to locate the oncology department with a little help from some maintenance workers.
I was a good hour early for my appointment, but apparently the doctor wasn't very busy because I got in quite quickly to see him and was all finished by about the time of my appointment.
The oncologist was a young doctor name Yigal Kushnir, and he was good. We spoke in English, and he carefully explained the options and answered my questions. He considers both surgery (radical prostatectomy) and radiation to be good options for me, and he thinks I should choose. So, I'll talk again to my urologist here in Eilat (I made an appointment for the 31st) and perhaps to a few other people, and then I'll decide.
After the appointment, I walked over to a mall that is actually within the same security area as the hospital and is, of course, right next to it. I walked all around inside, and decided to each lunch at a place that had something that interested me. I don't know exactly what to call it. It was kind of like a small thick crust pizza but rolled up on 2 side. It contained hard-boiled eggs, cheese, mushrooms, and spinach, I think, and no tomato sauce. In any case, it was something I had never seen before, and I discovered that it was delicious, as well.
After eating, I walked around the hospital and the mall a bit more before deciding to walk back to the airport. It was VERY hot in Tel Aviv today (a heavy sharav), but there was a fairly strong wind, and it didn't feel too hot in the shade. I realized that I could probably walk most of the way in the shade, and so I did. I took several pictures of nice flowers along the way, which I have already posted on Facebook.
I arrived at the Sde Dov airport in Tel Aviv about an hour before my scheduled departure (which was 4:10), but the flight was again delayed. It was nice and cool in the terminal, though, so I didn't mind waiting. There was also good scenery, if you get my drift. LOL
I took today's pic of the day, a selfie with an interesting supertitle, there in the terminal:
The trip up there had been on a jet, but the return trip was on a turbo prop. I was sitting right under the wings, and I took a number of interesting pictures, including Netanya (I think), the Dead Sea (the Jordanian side), several kibbutzim in the southern Arava, and some shots just before landing (southbound) in Eilat. I posted some of these on Facebook, as well.
We arrived back in Eilat at about 6:00 p.m., so I walked directly over to Fay's house for the weekly meeting of our play-reading group. It was again very enjoyable. Afterwards, David & Bassia and I shared a taxi home because it really was still too hot out for me to be walking that far uphill.
I walked a total of 10.92 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 14 May 2016
I got up fairly early this morning and had to push myself to go out for a walk, but at least I did go for a short one. It was quite warm out. We're beginning to have a "sharav" here throughout the whole country, and it will be even stronger tomorrow and Monday. A sharav is combination of weather that happens mostly in the spring and, occasionally, in the autumn. It's abnormally hot and hazy, and it feels quite oppressive even though the humidity is low. I've never really experienced anything quite like it in the U.S., but it happens quite regularly here in Israel. Often, though, it actually misses Eilat. I took today's pic of the day this morning as the sun was just coming up over the Jordanian mountains, and it can give you some feel for what a sharav is like:
The rest of the day, I just stayed inside. I watched the BCC Friday night service from last night and was particularly moved by the Israeli music. They even sang Mi Kamokha to the tune of HaTikvah, the Israeli national anthem!
I spent most of the rest of the day finishing week 2 of my regression class. I had a little trouble with the programming at one point, but other than that it wasn't too difficult.
I walked a total of 1.98 kilometers today.

Friday, 13 May 2016
I got up fairly early this morning and went out for a long walk. It was great out! I took today's pic of the day not long after the sun had come up over the Jordanian mountains, while the shadows of the tall buildings were still very long on the desert hills:
I taught 4 units of Berlitz lessons today, back to back: 10:00-11:30 and 11:30-1:00.
I managed to get the weekly household tasks done this afternoon, and I also watched more video lectures from my online class in regression. I still have to do the programming work and the 2nd quiz based on it.
In the evening, I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate a little challah to welcome this Shabbat.
Afterwards, I went out for a medium-length walk. I felt quite tired, though, because it was still rather warm despite the nice breeze.
I walked a total of 4.34 kilometers today.
In honor of this week's national holidays, I leave you with the words of HaTikvah, our national anthem:

כל עוד בלבב פנימה
נפש יהודי הומיה
ולפאתי מזרח קדימה
עין לזיון צופיה
עוד לא אבדה תקוותנו
התקווה בת שמות אלפיים
להיות עם חופשי בארצנו
ארץ ציון וירשלים
As long as deep in the heart
The Jewish soul yearns
And to the East ahead
An eye looks to Zion,
Our hope has not been lost,
Our two-thousand-year hope,
To be a free people in Our Land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

Thursday, 12 May 2016 (Yom HaAtzma'ut)
I certainly woke up early this morning. I didn't go out for a walk because I was planning to eat breakfast early. You'll see why in a moment.
A little before 8:00 a.m., I set out walking down to a point near the library. The reason was that there was a big Open House today at the Ovda Airbase, and free shuttle buses to get there! At first, we were all a bit alarmed, because there were only 2 buses, and obviously more people than could fit in them. But a man assured us that more were on the way, and, sure enough, in a few minutes 3 or 4 more showed up.
I was quite excited to be getting out of town a bit and to be riding as a passenger on highway 12 (instead of being the driver), especially in the elevated position of a tour bus. Naturally, I snapped a lot of pictures. I sat on the left side of the bus in both directions, so on the way up a lot of my pics were actually of Egypt, since the road runs quite close to the border (sometimes, in fact, RIGHT next to it!) for about half the trip.
When we arrived at the base, we got off the bus and went through security. We also had to show them our national ID card (te'udat zehut). Then there were more buses to take us the rest of the distance (less than a kilometer, I think) to the terminal area (the base also serves as a civilian international airport).
The celebrations were all in the area near the civilian terminal, but there were plenty of displays of ground vehicle, firefighting equipment, fighter jets and a couple of other airplanes, several helicopters, 2 anti-missile defense systems (the Patriot and Iron Dome), and miscellaneous other things, including a jet engine. I had a hard time deciding on today's pic of the day, but I finally decided on this shot of the row of jets:
There were 3 large, white canopies set up for shade. Under one of them there was a stage and chairs for the audience. At one point, a band of air force soldiers played for us. It consisted of a percussion player, an electric guitarist, a electric bass guitarist, a keyboard player, and 2 singers (one male and one female). They were all very good and worked well together, too. I was particularly impressed with the singers and the keyboard player, partly because I'm a keyboard player myself, and partly (okay, MOSTLY!) because he was very cute! LOL
Under the second canopy, there were several tables set up with chairs around them where there were crafts for the kids. Of course, there were LOTS of kids everywhere!
The 3rd canopy was the food tent. I didn't get anything, but there was obviously quite a lot available. I had put two liter-and-half bottles of water in the freezer last night and brought them with me in a pack (that was ALL that was in the pack, except for paper towels on the bottom and wrapped around them to absorb some of the condensation). I actually ended up drinking only one of them, but I did drink all of it.
I really enjoyed myself. First, I checked out all the displays, then I watched the concert, then I mostly just sat under one of the canopies and relaxed. I think I stayed out of the sun enough to avoid sunburn, but I guess I'll only know for sure tomorrow. In any case, if I did burn, it was too mild for me to even notice yet. That's pretty good, considering that I wore a tank top and shorts, NO hat (I HATE hats; they make my head hot!), and NO sunscreen. Of course, I do have a pretty formidable base tan, if I say so myself!
When we got back to Eilat, I was hoping they would let us get off at the top instead of riding into town, and, sure enough, several people asked them to, and they did. So I only had to walk home from the highway 12 kikar, a much shorter and easier walk. This was especially nice in the middle of the day, when there's not nearly as much shade.
After lunch at home (weenies wrapped in tortillas and a big salad with 2 tomatoes), I watched lecture videos for the second week of my class in regression (part of the machine learning sequence).
In the early evening, after the sun was gone but before it got dark, I went out for a medium-length walk, taking 3 more pictures, all views toward the Jordanian mountains on the other side of the valley, still lit by the setting sun.
You can see more pics of my trip up, of the displays at the base, and of the trip back, on Facebook.

Wednesday, 11 May 2016 (Yom HaZikaron)
I got up fairly early this morning but still didn't go out for a walk.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lesson today, and, in fact, the first student had to leave the 40-minute lesson after only 15 minutes to go to an all-day meeting. It was really okay for him, though, since the whole meeting was going to be in English (even better practice than lessons!): 9:15-10:00 and 11:30-1:00.
I walked up to the 2nd nearest market between my lessons to buy a few more items.
I had shakshuka, made with 3 eggs and a cut-up half of a yellow bell pepper (plus half a can of shakshuka mix, of course) for lunch. It was delicious!
In the late afternoon, I went for a nice walk. It was quite warm out, but it was late enough in the day that I was able to stay almost entirely in the shade. I took a number of pictures, including today's pic of the day, a pretty little grassy are that I had never seen before:
In the evening, I watched the yearly ceremony on Har Herzl in Jerusalem that marks the transition from Yom HaZikaron (the solemn and sad Day of Remembrance) to Yom HaAtzma'ut (our joyful Day of Independence). An important part of this ceremony is the lighting of 12 torches by people who are being honored. Among them this year were an Eastern Orthodox priest, a female Druze doctor, and a deaf holocaust survivor who spoke in sign language.
I walked a total of 4.05 kilometers today.

Tuesday, 10 May 2016
I got up very late this morning and ate breakfast right away.
Right after my morning routine, I set out for Maccabi, where I got the form for my trip to Tel Aviv. Then I called Arkia Airlines and arranged my flights up and back. I fly out at 8:00 a.m., and the return flight will leave Sde Dov airport (in Tel Aviv) at 4:10 p.m. My appointment is at 11:20 a.m.
The WIZO meeting was really special today. Myrna Goldstein, one of our members, read us some of her poetry, and it was very good, with an interesting and engaging variety of moods, styles, and tones.
I had beans and weenies, plus a salad with added red and yellow bell peppers, for lunch at home today.
I taught only 1 unit of Berlitz lessons today: 2:45-3:30. It was a group I like, Spaniards who work for an international software company.
In the evening, I went out for another walk. At one point, I sat on a bench by Sheshet HaYamim Avenue and recorded a short video (2 minutes and 22 seconds) about Yom HaZikaron, which started less than an hour later with the first siren (there's another one tomorrow morning). This is without any doubt the saddest day of the entire year here in Israel because it's when we remember the fighters fallen in our many wars and the innocent victims who died in terror attacks. Nearly every family in the country has lost at least one, so it is extremely personal for so many people. Today's pic of the day is one I took earlier in the walk, looking down Argaman to the Gulf and Aqaba beyond. If you look carefully, you can see the giant "Flag of the Arab Revolt" near the center of the picture. It's located in Aqaba right by the sea:

This is without any doubt the saddest day of the entire year here in Israel because it's when we remember the fighters fallen in our many wars and the innocent victims who died in terror attacks. Nearly every family in the country has lost at least one, so it is extremely personal for so many people. Today's pic of the day is one I took earlier in the walk, looking down Argaman to the Gulf and Aqaba beyond. If you look carefully, you can see the giant "Flag of the Arab Revolt" near the center of the picture. It's located in Aqaba right by the sea:
I walked a total of 7.64 kilometers today.

Monday, 9 May 2016
I got up a bit late this morning after having gotten to bed a bit late last night.
I taught 7 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45, 3:00-4:30, 5:30-7:00, and 7:00-8:30.
In the morning, I got a call from the Ikhilov Hospital and was able to schedule an appointment in oncology there for next Sunday at 11:20. That should give me enough time to get there. I then quickly walked down to the Maccabi office to try to start the process for the flight, but they closed at noon, and I was a minute late. It was a little hot to be walking uphill in the middle of the day, so I waited and took a bus back home. I'll go down to the Maccabi office tomorrow morning before the WIZO meeting.
I had a salad with added tomato, vegetarian chicken breasts, and trail mix for lunch at home today.
After my first afternoon class, I took a short walk over to the park and back. It was pretty warm, but by that time (nearly 5:00 p.m.), it was mostly shady. I managed to get a picture of a crow, today's pic of the day:
In the evening, I went up to sign some papers so that Me'ir's landlady can enter his apartment, clear things out, and then rent it to someone else. Me'ir is, in fact, in jail, though I don't know for exactly what. I actually talked with his neighbor, Ohad, on the same floor, who rents from the same landlady and had gotten the papers from her. It turns out that Ohad is a producer of trance music, so we had quite a nice chat (in English, although he's Israeli), and we're going to get together to exchange music ideas and experience.
I walked a total of 3.83 kilometers today.

I got up fairly early but didn't go out for a walk. Later in the morning, I did walk down to visit a friend. After that, I walked over to the Maccabi to get my monthly prescriptions filled and buy a few other items. On my walk back home, I met 2 people I know from WIZO and chatted for a while with each of them. I also took a number of flower pictures along the way, which I posted on Facebook. This one, a kind I don't think I've seen before, is today's pic of the day:
I ate a couple of cheese and tomato sandwiches and some ice cream for lunch at home today.
I was lazy most of the afternoon, just relaxing and playing games.
In the evening, I walked down to Fay's house to join a new group of people (from the WIZO group) to get together and read plays, just for fun. It was very enjoyable.

Shabbat, 7 May 2016
I got up a little late this morning and so didn't go out for a walk.
I finished the 1st week of my online class on regression, the 2nd course in the Machine Learning specialization sequence, today. It was really quite fun.
I had my now-traditional scrambled eggs with rice, plus a salad, for lunch at home.
In the late afternoon, I enjoyed my regular chat with David's sister in Ohio.
After that, I went out for a long walk on Sheshet HaYamim Avenue to the far side of Shakhamon and back on Harim Road. I took quite a few photos, many of them views of Aqaba just before dusk. Today's pic of the day is one of them (you can see most of the other pictures I took on Facebook):
On my walk, I saw 2 jetliner flying over Sinai, around the southern tip of Israel, and then heading northeast over Jordan.
I walked 6.77 kilometers today.

Friday, 6 May 2016
I got up early this morning, spent a few minutes outside with Pascal, and then went for a fairly long walk around the Mitzpe Yam neighborhood. Before returning home, I stopped at the local bakery to buy challah for Shabbat. I took quite a few pictures, including a series of the sun as it rose over the Jordanian mountains. Today's pic of the day is one of them (they're all on Facebook):
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45 and 12:00-1:30.
I did the weekly house cleaning tasks this morning, too.
Before lunch, I made a quick trip to the nearest market to buy a few items. Then I had cheese veggie burger sandwiches and a big salad with an added half of a deep red bell pepper for lunch at home.
I spent much of the afternoon watching lecture videos for my class on regression. It was generally interesting, although quite a bit of the rather elementary optimization that the instructor was presenting was VERY familiar to me from my optimization work in the mid-1980s. In most of those, I was tweaking the design parameters of silos for the Peacekeeper missiles that were being developed in order to maintain the survivability of the system against a nuclear attack while minimizing the overall system cost. I did the optimizations, but many other people were writing the actual FORTRAN code to assess both the survivability and the costs. It was really quite amazing work. Of course, in the end, NONE of the basing plans we were working on were ever actually implemented, mostly due to the end of the Cold War.
Later in the afternoon, I took another walk on which I photographed more flowers and views. I have also posted these on Facebook.
In the evening, I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate a bit of challah to welcome Shabbat. I always enjoy singing the beautiful blessings even though there's no one but Pascal to hear them.
I walked a total of 6.4 kilometers today.
I'll close this evening with the traditional blessing for lighting the Shabbat candles, for wine, and for bread (including, of course, challah):
ברוך אתה, יי אלוהינו, מלך העולם, אשר קידשנו במצוותיו וציבנו להדליק נר של שבת
Blessed are you, Adonai our God, ruler of the universe, who has made us holy with your commands and commanded us to light the Shabbat lights.
Blessed are you, Adonai our God, ruler of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine.
Blessed are you, Adonai our God, ruler of the universe, who has made us holy with your commandments and desired us, and bequeathed to us the Shabbat of your holiness with love and favor, a memorial of the works of creation. For it is the premier day of all the holidays of holiness, a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt. For you have chosen us from among all the peoples and made us holy and bequeathed to us the Shabbat of your holiness with love and favor. Blessed are you Adonai, who makes the Shabbat holy.
ברוך אתה, יי אלוהינו, מלך העולם, המוציא לחם מן הארץ
Blesses are you, Adonai our God, who brings bread forth from the earth.

Thursday, 5 May 2016
I got up fairly early but didn't go out for a walk.
At 10:00 this morning, the sirens sounded for Holocaust Day in memory of the 6,000,000 murdered by the Nazis. I was walking to my appointment at the hospital, so I stopped and bowed my head, together with everybody else in the entire country. Then I continued to my appointment with the urologist at the hospital. He said that I should have a radical prostatectomy.
I then walked over to the Maccabi office to find out what I needed to do next. I learned that I needed to see the Maccabi urologist again, which didn't surprise me really. I took the bus back home to avoid too much walking in the hot midday sun.
When I got back home, I went onto the Maccabi website and found that I could get an appointment with my urologist this afternoon, so I grabbed it.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 2:45-3:30 and 7:00-8:30.
After my first lesson, I walked down to the 4:15 appointment with my Maccabi urologist. He was rather annoyed to discover that they had only sent me to another urologist, NOT a specialist in oncology. He actually HAD written urology on his letter, though. Anyway, he gave me another letter specifically mentioning oncology and the Ikhilov Hospital in Tel Aviv where he wants me to go, and this time they've gotten it right. This means, of course, that we STILL don't know whether I'll actually have surgery or whether radiation is a better option. I have to call to schedule an appointment, but they gave me the telephone number. I'll do it on Sunday (they won't be open Friday or Shabbat because it will be the weekend).
Along my walk, I took a number of beautiful pictures, which I have already posted to Facebook. One of them is also today's pic of the day, some very tiny purple flowers:
After I was finished at Maccabi, I went into a nearby falafel restaurant and got only a bottle of Coke Zero. Then, I sat there for quite a while drinking it and enjoying the coolness of the A/C (and allowing the sun to get lower) before starting back home a longer way. I also stopped at the Shufersal on Y'rushalayim St. and spent more than 200 of the 250 shekels on my gift card from Berlitz. Some of that was merely stocking up on some things I would be getting eventually anyway, and some of it was special items I like but which I don't usually buy these days because they're a bit on the expensive side. So, that was nice.
I walked a total of 7.86 kilometers today (all in flip-flops).

I got up fairly early this morning but didn't go out for a walk.
I taught 9 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:15-10:00, 10:00-11:30, 11:30-1:00, 2:45-4:15, and 5:00-6:30.
I had a salad and vegetarian shnitzels for lunch at home today.
After my last class, I walked down to the Kle Zemer store (near the main Maccabi office) to buy an adaptor so that I can listen to my piano through headphones. The output port of the piano is the larger audio size, but the headphone jack is the small size, so the adaptor lets me connect them. This way, I can play the piano without disturbing anyone.
Along the way on my walk, I took several pictures. I posted most of them to Facebook but saved this sunset picture to be pic of the day:
I walked a total of 4.84 kilometers today.

Tuesday, 3 May 2016
I got up very early this morning but didn't go out for a walk. Instead, I ate breakfast more than an hour earlier than I usually do and then walked down to the central post office, getting there just before they opened shortly at 8:00, to pick up some registered mail I had received. It turned out to be my Pesach gift (a little late, I'd say) from Berlitz. It's a 250-shekel card that can be used at Shufersals (supermarkets) and most of the major mall clothing chains. It was a little warm out, so I decided to take a bus back home rather than walk uphill in the heat.
Later, I walked over to today's WIZO meeting. After our usual chatting over coffee, tea, and cake, it was time for Terry's tenor sax recital. Unfortunately, though, only 2 or 3 numbers in, the electricity went out, which killed his back-up, without which he didn't want to continue. He'll be doing it for us later this month. The pic of the day is of some pretty leaves with wood of a tree (where a limb had been cut off some time ago, I think) in the background. I thought it was rather pretty:
We left WIZO House before the power came back on. The word they got was that it was city-wide, but when I got back home, it was clear that it had NOT gone out here at all, since my computers weren't down, and the time on the microwave didn't need to be set.
I had a salad and beans and weenies for lunch at home today.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons: 2:45-3:30 and 7:00-8:30.
In the afternoon, I began watching the video lectures for my new online machine learning class, on regression. It's going to be quite interesting and perhaps a bit challenging at times, as well.
I walked a total of 6.02 kilometers today.

I woke up early this morning, feeling refreshed, and went out for a walk all the way to the southwest end of Harim Road and back. I took quite a few pictures along the way, mostly of flowers, which I have already posted to Facebook. I also took this picture of the construction along Harim Road and the top of Ein Yahav Street (the road where I used to live), today's pic of the day:
I taught 11 units (eight and a quarter hours!) of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45, 9:45-11:15, 11:15-12:45, 3:00-4:30, 5:00-6:30, and 6:30-8:00.
I made a couple of trips to the local markets before lunch, one to buy a 6-pack of PepsiMax and the other to buy a few additional grocery items.
I walked a total of 6.11 kilometers today.

I got up fairly early this morning but didn't go out for a walk. I DID go outside a little with Pascal, however, and shot today's pic of the day:
I attended the monthly Berlitz "brown bag meeting" online this morning. They can't actually REQUIRE us to be there since we're not paid for it, but they DO put quite a lot of pressure on us to show up. It was okay.
I baked the yam I bought the other day in my toaster oven for lunch today. It was good. I also had a couple of vegetarian shnitzels.
I signed up for the rest of the Machine Learning specialization today. The next class, which starts this week, is about regression, a statistical method for predictions based on past data.
This evening, I walked down to the pharmacy to get a few things. Then I returned a longer way, going all the way to the end of HaTmarim and back mostly on Sheshet HaYamim. I took several beautiful pics of flowers that I have now posted on Facebook.
I walked a total of 4.94 kilometers today.
