I got up very early this morning and went out for quite a long walk up into town. Then I came back and enjoyed a big delicious breakfast at my hotel. Afterwards, I got in my rented car and drove to the nearby Ashkelon National Park. Ashkelon is a VERY old city's! The first site I saw featured the oldest known arched gate, built by the Caananites even before the Philistines arrived in the area!
From there I just drove somewhat randomly around today's town, getting a feel for its various neighborhoods. I was particularly impressed by the number of nice villas (single family homes) around town, both older ones and very new ones.
I came back to the hotel in the middle of the day to rest for a while. Then I looked up a restaurant that had been recommended to me and drove there for lunch. It's an Asian restaurant called Mai Way. I don't know how it's pronounced. "My way"? "My Y"? "May way"? Anyway, I had a business lunch special that included vegetarian sushi and vegetarian pad thai, and it was excellent.
After exploring the area near the restaurant, which quite clearly the original modern town, I got back in the car and drove up to visit Ashdod, another city where I had never been before. I drove through the city, visited the beach area, and then headed back towards Ashkelon, stopping at a mall by the highway to buy a few items.
In the evening, I just relaxed on the balcony of my hotel room and enjoyed the lovely cool sea breezes. It was really a very lovely day!
I walked a total of 10.5 kilometers today.
One final note: during the next 3 days I'll be at a retreat a Kibbutz Inbar and may not get a chance to post here. If I don't, I'll write about some of my experiences when I return home afterwards.
