I woke up and got up early this morning but really just didn't feel like going out for a walk. I think it was partly because of how far I walked yesterday and partly because I've just generally been feeling a little bit more uneasy in recent days.
I taught only 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:30-11:00, 12:00-1:30, and 3:00-4:30.
I did go out and walk a little after my first lesson and worked out briefly, as well.
I had weenies wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas (which finally had returned to the market yesterday!), 2 tomato sandwiches with old-fashioned mustard and mayonnaise on whole-grain bread, and some ice cream for lunch at home today.
In the evening, I again worked out briefly and took a slightly longer walk.
I walked a total of 4.17 kilometers today.

Sunday, 28 February 2016
I slept well last night and got up very early this morning. Then I went for a long walk: over to Shakhamon, down through the middle of it, back across on Khativat HaNegev, and back up home, mostly on Argaman. It was great!
A good friend here whom I've known for several years came over this morning, and we enjoyed a lovely time together. Afterwards, I walked down into town with him and then did a little shopping over on HaTmarim. The only thing I bought was a small frying pan. I had kept only my huge one, thinking that, if I only had one frying pan, it should be the largest one. However, I found that, when cooking eggs for just one person, the big one really isn't very suitable. After that purchase, I walked home by a somewhat circuitous route, including a short stop at Mercaz Mor.
I managed to finish my Algorithms, Biology, and Programming for Beginners class today. Well, actually, I gave up on the last 2 programming challenges, but I'll do just fine in the class anyway.
I had 3 fried eggs (using my new pan!) and a large salad with greens, red bell pepper, seeds, and walnuts, dressed with 1000 island dressing, for lunch today at home.
I had my annual General Performance Review for Berlitz today. I got rated a little lower than last year because I got quite a few less "excellent" ratings from students. As usual, I had to listen to a rather long lecture about how I talk too much and don't get the students to talk enough. It's mostly true, of course, but I still don't enjoy hearing about it over and over. I'm trying to change, but it's just a bit against my talkative nature. LOL
In the early evening, I walked to the closest market and did some fairly serious grocery shopping.
A little later in the evening, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out a fair amount. The weather was absolutely perfect. Afterwards, I walked down into Canada Gardens and hung out there a bit, as well. On the way back, I stopped at the other grocery store and bought a couple more items.
I walked a total of 13.31 kilometers today, more than I have in one day in quite some time now.

Shabbat, 27 February 2016
I slept well last night, but got up rather late. I still went out for a nice long walk, however.
I watched the BCC services from last night this morning.
In the late morning, I walked up to the gym and worked out a little and then walked down into Canada Gardens and just relaxed for a while. It was pleasant out, a little hot in the sun, but nice in the shade, with a gentle breeze.
In the afternoon, I worked on my class and made some progress. I had some frustrating problems with it, though, and, in fact, am currently stuck on one of the coding exercises.
I talked fairly briefly with David's sister in Ohio, who is out of the hospital but still feeling very weak and unstable in her walking.
Overall, I felt a bit lazy and tired today, and a little emotional, too, for no obvious reason.
I walked a total of 8.41 kilometers today.

I slept well, woke up early, and went out for a LONG walk this morning. I went up Argaman to Harim Road, all the way to its southern end, down the nearly finished part of the Nakhal Garuf tayelet, back across Nakhal Shakhamon on Sheshet HaYamim, up the nakhal behind the high school, and up into Canada Gardens via Khalilan Path. I stopped at the bakery to buy challah and a box of cookies before finally returning home.
I did the weekly housecleaning chores after breakfast this morning.
I taught only 2 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-11:30.
Before lunch, I walked over and sat in Canada Gardens for a bit, enjoying the lovely day. A group of small boys (and later one girl, as well), were kicking the soccer ball around on the lawn there. It wasn't a real game, but they were all obviously having fun. I shot a short video of it and immediately uploaded it to Facebook.
I had a big salad (greens with an added tomato) and mini veggie burgers in mini whole-wheat pitas for lunch at home today. For dessert, I ate some cookies.
In the afternoon, I relaxed and also watched videos for my algorithms, biology, and programming class.
Total walking for the day: 7.25 kilometers
I lit candles, drank some sweet red wine, and ate a bit of challah to welcome Shabbat. A little later, I felt a bit poetic, so I wrote this poem, translating it still later in Hebrew. Here are both versions:

Shabbat Arrives
Challah, and maybe some cookies, in the early morning,
Boys playing kaduregel in the park, and a girl, too,
The next-door neighbors cooking, cooking, cooking (fish?)
And talking -- sometimes quiet, and sometimes animated
“Shabbat shalom!” “Shabbat shalom!”
Candles -- “... l’hadlik ner shel Shabbat”
Sweet, red wine -- “... ki hu yom t’khila l’mikra’ei kodesh …”
Challah -- “... hamotzi lekhem min ha’aretz”
And the Shabbat angels gently alight,
Bringing peace, holiness, wholeness, renewal, …
Shabbat shalom l’khulam!

I slept well last night and got up a bit later than normal.
I taught 8 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-10:30, 10:30-12:00, 12:00-1:30, and 6:00-7:30.
I had shakshuka for lunch at home today. Actually, I didn't make it quite right -- I stirred up the egg in the sauce, so that it was more like shakshuka-flavored scrambled eggs. It was still good, though.
In the late afternoon, before my last class, I walked all the way to the pet store in the industrial area to buy cat food. I'm sure that I could have bought it at 2 or 3 other stores that are closer, but I like that store, and, besides, I figured the exercise of walking there would be good for me.
I walked a total of 6.31 kilometers today.

I slept well last night and got up quite early this morning.
I taught 7 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:15-10:00, 11:30-1:00, 4:30-6:00, and 6:00-7:30.
After my first lesson, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out for a while, then walked for a bit more.
During the 2nd lesson and lunch, I ran a load of laundry, which is now drying on the rack in the hallway in front of my apartment.
For lunch, I had beans and weenies. The beans were a mixture of white beans in tomato sauce and brown beans in Mexican sauce. Delicious!
After lunch, I went for a fairly long but quite leisurely walk, going through Izidor and wandering back home on a number of back walks, resting several times in lovely, shaded locations.
In the evening, I did a little grocery shopping at the local market.
I walked a total of 7.83 kilometers today.

The electricity was off this morning when I woke up (I don't think it had been off long, though), and boy was it dark! My phone was right on the stand by the bed, so it was easy to use its built-in "flashlight" function, and I also remembered where I had put a real flashlight, so there was really no serious trouble. Still, it did throw my morning routine off just a bit. It wasn't too long, however, before the electricity came back on, and all was well.
Today at WIZO, one of our members, Sharona, gave a nice presentation on the early history of rock 'n' roll, illustrated with some nice videos. It's not music that I know very well, even though she and I are almost exactly the same age, but it was interesting and enjoyable anyway.
After the meeting, I went to Fonda's apartment to try to fix a problem she's having with sending out e-mail from her Android tablet, but I wasn't successful. It was nice, though, to see where she lives (and her lovely studio apartment). It's not very far from me, either, but she's on the 6th floor with a nice view of the Eilat Mountains.
In the late afternoon, I took a mini-laptop that I have not been using over to David and Bassia's. There laptop isn't working, so they're going to see if this one can work for them. Unfortunately, the Windows XP system on it is entirely in Hebrew, so, although we got it connected to their WiFi network, we still weren't able to surf the internet. They're going to see if they can get an English system installed, and then it should be much easier to fix the problem (if it even still exists!).
On my way back, I stopped at a market over near there and bought Mexican canned beans, natural peanut butter (just peanuts and salt), and some Haas avocados, all of which are difficult to find in most supermarkets.
I taught only one 2-unit Berlitz lesson today: 7:00-8:30.
I walked a total of 6.54 kilometers today.

I slept well last night and got up a little late but well-rested.
I taught 10 units of Berlitz lessons today (except for a 2-unit no-show): 9:30-11:00, 12:00-1:30, 3:00-4:30, 5:30-7:00 (the no-show), and 7:00-8:30.
I went out for 3 short walks nearby during my breaks today. It was threatening to rain all day, but it didn't actually do it, at least not near me.
I walked a total of only 3.79 kilometers today.

I slept well last night and got up quite early this morning.
After breakfast, I walked down to the bank to transfer some money, and then I did a little window shopping (without buying anything at all) in several shops in the area before walking back home.
I finished week 3 of my Algorithms, Biology, and Programming course today.
In the late afternoon, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out a fair amount, then continued walking for quite a while longer.
In the early evening, I talked with David's sister in Ohio who is in the hospital. She's hoping to get out on Tuesday.
A little later, I walked over to the nearest grocery store to do a small amount of shopping.
I walked a total of 10.59 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 20 February 2016
I got to bed very late last night and slept well but got up late this morning.
The day generally got off to a pretty slow start, but I did finally get myself up to speed. I watched a long but very interesting YouTube video by a former Adventist ministry student, telling about his gradual process of becoming an atheist -- the various steps on his journey and his reasoning. After that, I did some work on my "Algorithms, Biology, and Programming" class.
After eating lunch at home, I walked up to the outdoor gym, worked out there briefly, and then took a fairly long walk north on Harim Road. I climbed up the hill near the pencils kikar and enjoyed the great view, then walked leisurely back home via Sheshset HaYamim Blvd.
I was supposed to talk to David's sister today, but she wasn't able to connect to get through to me. She's still in the hospital. Her husband called me from home to let me know what was happening. We'll try again tomorrow to talk.
In the evening, I took an even longer walk, going all the way to the south end of Sheshet HaYamim, then up the part of the Nakhal Garuf tayelet that it finished enough to be passable, then continuing up to the south end of Harim Road and walking back home on it. I rested several times.
I walked a total of 10.79 kilometers today.

I slept well last night but still got up quite late. Before breakfast, I walked up to the bakery to buy challah. While I was up that way, I also bought a 6-pack of PepsiMax at the market next door.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-9:45 and 10:00-11:30.
After my lessons, I did the now-traditional house cleaning and ate 2 cheese-and-tomato sandwiches for lunch at home.
In the late afternoon, I walked up to the gym and worked out briefly, then continued strolling around the Mitzpe Yam neighborhood, stopping 2 or 3 times just to enjoy the lovely day.
In the evening, as the light was about to fade from our beautiful valley, I lit candles, drank a little sweet red wine, and ate some challah to welcome Shabbat.
Bassia & David had invited me to join them with the Latin American community, so I walked down there this evening. Even though I couldn't understand most of the Spanish, I still enjoyed the evening.
I walked a total of 7.7 kilometers today.
At the end of this week, during which much of the world celebrated love, I leave you with this blessing, which comes right before the Shma in the evening prayers:

אהבת עולם בית ישראל עמך אהבת
תורה ומצות, חקים ומשפטים אותנו למדת
על-כן, יי אלהינו, בשכבנו ובקומנו נשיח בחקיך
ונשמח בדברי תורתך ובמצותיך לעולם ועד
כי הם חיינו וארך ימינו, ובהם נהגה יומם ולילה
ואהבתך אל-תסיר ממנו לעולמים
ברוך אתה, יי, אוהב עמו ישראל
With an eternal love have You loved the House of Israel, Your people.
Teachings and commandments, laws and judgments, have You taught us.
So, Eternal One, our God, when we lie down and when we rise up we will discuss Your laws,
And be happy in the words of Your teachings and in Your commandments forever,
For they are our lives, and the length of our days, and on them will we meditate day and night.
Never withdraw Your love from us.
Blessed are You, Eternal One, Lover of Your people, Israel.

I slept well last night and woke up quite early but somehow just didn't feel like getting up and getting going very quickly.
I taught only 5 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:15-10:00, 11:30-1:00, and 6:00-7:30.
I went up and worked out a little at the outdoor gym after my first class and then went and relaxed in the park.
After lunch at home, I walked down to the senior center to look into a 60+ club I had heard about. The receptionist there gave me the page (in Hebrew, of course) about it, and I sat down and read it. Although I'd like to increase my social connections, especially with Hebrew speakers, I don't think this will be something that would be worthwhile for me. But I'm glad I checked it out, and I can always change my mind, too.
After that, I walked home by a somewhat more circuitous route, stopping several times to rest. It was quite hot out today, particularly in the sun, and I also felt rather tired and not very motivated. When I returned home, I sat in my comfortable IKEA chair and even dozed off for a few minutes.
I walked a total of 5.09 kilometers today.

I slept well last night and got up quite late, feeling well-rested.
Today's WIZO meeting was special. A group of kids for the Harei Eilat school (the one very near where I used to live in Shakhamon) joined us. They came to sing for us and to practice their English conversation skills, and it really was very charming.
I also met a man whose wife just died last month and who joined us for the first time today at WIZO. We chatted for quite a bit, and he seems really nice. He and his wife made aliyah from London about 4 years ago.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 2:45-3:30 and 5:00-6:30.
Between the 2 lessons, I walked over and sat for a bit in the park, enjoying the lovely day. After the last class, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out a while there, then continued walking over to the green strip in Shakhamon, where I sat and rested a little. Then I walked back via Sheshet HaYamim Blvd., resting a little more once again in Ganei Kanada before buying some ice cream, which I've been craving for some time recently, and heading home.
I walked a total of 10.16 kilometers today.

Monday, 15 February 2016
I woke up last night around 2:30 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep until about 5:00. I finally got up about quarter to seven and still felt a bit sleepy. The rest of the day was fine, though.
I was scheduled to teach 12 units (9 hours of Berlitz lessons today), but the 5:00 lesson was a no-show: 9:00-10:30, 10:30-12:00, 12:00-1:30, 3:30-5:00, 5:30-7:00 (no-show), and 7:00-8:30.
After eating lunch at home, I went for a short walk over to the park and just sat there in the shade, enjoying the warm air and cool breezes.
I walked only 950 meters today.

I slept a little weirdly and woke up late but feeling very rested.
I didn't eat breakfast at all this morning but instead waited until 11:00 and had brunch at Rachel Café with my friend, Moshe, who's moving to Netanya this week. I'll really miss him!
In the afternoon, I prepared for my lessons tomorrow (six 2-unit lessons!), did some work on the course I'm taking (Algorithms, Biology, and Programming for Beginners), and then went out for a fairly long, leisurely walk around town as the shadows were starting to lengthen.
At one point during my walk, I sat down on a bench on Yahel Street. After a bit, an old man came along with a smile and shook my hand. Then he sat down on the bench beside me. I soon found out that he spoke neither Hebrew nor English. Nevertheless, I managed to also learn that he knew the first few numbers in Hebrew and that he spoke Russian, Ukrainian, and Yiddish, and he understood that I spoke English (and Hebrew). Unfortunately, we had no common language in which to communicate, but he seemed like a nice guy. After a few minutes, he got up and left.
In the evening, I worked a bit more on the course.
I walked a total of 8.4 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 13 February 2016
I had a dream last night about someone playing from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, and then somehow I got to thinking about tuning and its complexities, which kept me awake for a bit. Overall, though, I got good sleep, but I did get up a bit later than usual.
I watched the BCC service from last night, as has been my regular custom in recent months, and found myself in a particularly emotional state. It wasn't sadness or nostalgia -- it was more like a deep feeling of connectedness with reality, and of gratitude. Thanks, Lisa and Juval!
Before lunch, I walked up to the outdoor gym, worked out a little there, and then took a leisurely walk in Canada Gardens, with lots of resting and enjoying the beautiful day.
I had beans and (vegetarian) weenies plus whole-wheat crackers for lunch at home today.
After lunch, I took another slow but longer walk around town, trying to stay mostly in the shade, and again enjoying a number of restful stops. Again today, the weather was really great, although a bit warmer. In the next few days, it's expected to get downright hot.
At 5:00, I had my usual Skype conversation with David's sister, Joyce, and found out that she's STILL hospitalized. She's feeling better, though. She won't be released until at least Tuesday because she has an important test scheduled for Monday.
In the evening, I made shopping trips to both the local markets. In particular, I needed to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables.
I've taken over the job of communications secretary for our local WIZO English speakers' group. The biggest, most regular part of this job is sending out the weekly e-mail reminders about our Tuesday morning meetings. So I worked on that this evening and sent out the announcement about next Tuesday's meeting.
I walked a total of 7.15 kilometers today.

I slept well except for a fair amount of tossing and turning due to some discomfort in my hips or lower back (nothing serious, I'm sure!). Still, I felt rested and got up quite early. Before breakfast, I went up to the bakery and bought challah, hamantashen, and other cookies.
I taught only 4 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:00-11:30 and 12:00-1:30. I also did all the weekly house-cleaning in the morning.
For lunch, I ate 2 veggie burger and cheese sandwiches.
After lunch, I went out for a walk around the city, including some areas I hadn't ever walked in before.
In the evening, I lit candles, drank a bit of sweet red wine, and ate some challah (and even relented and gave a bit of challah to Pascal!) to welcome the Shabbat queen.
I walked a total of 6.63 kilometers today.
In honor of this week's big news from astrophysics, the recent successful verification of gravitational waves, a breakthrough in verifying Einstein's theories, I leave you with this line from the Ma'ariv (evening) prayers:

Thursday, 11 February 2016
I slept well last night and got up early this morning.
I taught only 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-10:30, 3:00-4:30, and 6:00-7:30.
After my first lesson, I went with my former landlord to close out the "arnona" (city tax that is generally paid by residents rather than owners of apartments) and the gas bill. They had been deducting the arnona from my account, but only the discounted amount that we got because of David's disability (he got a 90% discount on it), so I needed to pay the difference for the time since he died. The gas bill was a trivial amount that I could easily pay in cash.
I had to arrange to make payments for the arnona I owe and also for the final electric bill. In both cases, I was able to split it out over 18 months, but that means I'll be paying a combined amount of about 150 shekels every month out of my already-very-tight budget, which worries me a little.
More worrisome, though, is the fact that I have to pay my former landlord for damages to the apartment (mostly done by the cats). He decided to postpone talking about that until next month, but I already know it's going to be around 6,000 shekels, and I have NO idea how I'll manage that.
I had a big salad with a tomato and sunflower seeds, plus some cheese, for lunch today at home.
Between my 2nd and 3rd lessons, I walked up to the gym and worked out a little and then took a long walk before returning home.
I walked a total of 6.79 kilometers today.

Wednesday, 10 February 2016
I slept well last night and woke up early. I had set an alarm, just in case, but was up well before it went off. I immediately ate breakfast and did my basic morning routine. I was out of the house and walking to the airport at about 6:30, arriving there about 7:00. My flight was supposed to leave at 8:00, but it was delayed due to a mechanical problem (at least, I think that's what they said), so we didn't actually leave until around 9:15.
After arriving at the Sde Dov airport (right in Tel Aviv, by the sea, just north of the Yarkon River), I set out walking to a bus stop where I could catch a bus to the Assuta Hospital. I waited there quite a while and eventually ended up taking a different number, which got there by a more circuitous route. Still, I was there plenty early, and immediately headed for a rest room to do the enema I had to do. I don't think I actually did a very good job of it, but it was okay.
The test was a transrectal ultrasound and biopsy. It wasn't very pleasant, but it also wasn't actually painful, either. I waited until they had a letter and a disk of the images ready for me, and then went down and had a vegan sandwich at the Arcaffé restaurant right there in the hospital.
After that, I walked all the way back to the airport. It took me a little more than an hour and a half, but that was only because I stopped and rested several times. The weather in Tel Aviv was perfect today: sunny with a few clouds and a gentle, cool breeze.
My flight back to Eilat, at 5:00, was uneventful and went just as planned. After deplaning, I walked back up to my place.
I walked a total of 13.56 kilometers today, a new record for a single day.

Tuesday, 9 February 2016
I slept well and got up quite early.
I really enjoyed the WIZO meeting today. People talked about memories of their families and other interesting stories. There were so many that we actually ran out of time, and the rest of us will tell our stories another time. We also celebrated Fay's birthday (she's the founder of this group of English speakers).
After the meeting, I did a little shopping at the Shufersal near there, and then walked up with David & Bassia to see their new apartment. It's small, but nice and comfy. Then I walked on home.
I had vegan shwarma, hummus, salat turki, and mayonnaise (I know, I know!) in a pita for lunch at home today.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 3:00-4:30, 5:00-6:30, and 7:00-8:30.
During the break in my middle lesson, I received a call from my former landlord about closing out all the bills and arranging to pay him. We're going to try to do it Thursday morning, but I'm really worried, because I don't think I'll have enough money for any of it. Hopefully, I can extend things out over quite a bit of time, but even that is going to make it quite difficult for me. I'm trying to be optimistic and not borrow trouble, but I'm still quite concerned.
I walked only 3.86 kilometers today.

Monday, 8 February 2016
I slept both well and long last night and got up quite late this morning.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:30-11:00, 11:00-12:30, and 5:30-7:00.
In the hour between my first 2 lessons, I walked up to the outdoor gym and worked out a bit, walked a little more to the park, and relaxed a bit there, enjoying the beautiful day.
I had tomato and cheese sandwiches for lunch at home today.
After lunch, I took a long walk. First, I walked all the way down Argaman. Then I headed south on the road down the coast, stopping at the small beach just south of the navy base, and going as far as the port. I had planned to walk up from the port past where the new cars are parked awaiting delivery to the rest of the country, but my way was blocked by concertina wire that I couldn't get around, so I had to walk back northward on the coast road. I managed, however, to find the trail up Nakhal Shakhamon, and so I walked up that until Khativat HaNegev Road. From there, I walked up Haggai Street to Sheshet HaYamim Road and then home through the lower parts of Mitzpe Yam. It was a great walk on an absolutely perfect day!
I walked a total of a little over 11 kilometers today.

Sunday, 7 February 2016
I slept well last night but woke up VERY early and couldn't really get back to sleep. I didn't let myself actually get up out of bed, though, until 5:00.
I attended the Berlitz "brown bag" virtual meeting this morning. Our leader, Betsy, holds one of these each month, usually on the first Sunday. They can't require us to attend since they don't pay us for it, so I usually skip it, but I decided maybe I should attend this morning.
After that, I walked into town on several errands. First stop was the pharmacy to get prescriptions filled, both my regular monthly ones and the special ones for antibiotics and an enema related to my upcoming exam.
Next stop was the bus station to get a "Kav Rav" card. It's free, and I thought it would get me a discount on the buses, but when I got home and read more about it later on, I found out that I'm not yet old enough. The age for senior discounts for WOMEN is 60, but for men it's 65, alas.
The final stop was at the bank ATM to withdraw money to pay my rent. Then I walked very leisurely back home, making a brief stop at the market on Sheshet HaYamim to replenish my supply of cashews.
I had a big salad, with greens and a yellow bell pepper, and 2 cheese veggie burger sandwiches for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon, I went out for a brief walk, including a short time at the outdoor gym, but it was overcast and a little cool, and I just didn't feel like going for another extended walk.
I walked a total of 7.1 kilometers today.

Shabbat, 6 February 2016
I slept well and got up early this morning.
After breakfast, I watched the recording of last night's service at BCC (Beth Chayim Chadashim).
Then I went out for a walk for about 2 hours in the area of the city north of me, going as far down as the Collier Center.
I had a tomato and weenies (vegetarian, of course) wrapped in whole-wheat tortillas for lunch at home today.
After a little rest, I went out for another walk of more than an hour and a half, this one over to Shakhamon, south of here. On both walks, I also visited the outdoor gym and worked out a bit there.
Today was such a lovely day, sunny with some clouds in the morning, but cool, with a nice breeze.
In the evening, I talked with David's sister in Ohio and found out that she's been in the hospital since Wednesday with a blood infection. She's beginning to recover and feels a little better now, though.
I walked a total of 13.24 kilometers today, the most of any day this week.

I slept well last night and got up quite early this morning. Before breakfast, I took my usual walk up to the bakery to buy challah.
I was scheduled to teach 4 units of Berlitz lessons today, but the first lesson, 1 unit, turned out to be a no-show: 9:00-9:45, 10:00-11:30, and 12:45-1:30.
I had Mexican beans, a tomato, and some slices of bread for lunch at home today.
In the afternoon, I took a leisurely walk around town, going as far as the Izidor neighborhood, Y'rushalayim HaShlemah ("The Complete Jerusalem") Street to near Harim Road, and then more or less directly back home.
In the evening, I lit candles, drank a bit of sweet red wine, and ate challah to welcome Shabbat.
I walked a total of 6.22 kilometers today.
In honor of the Sabbath, I leave you with the commandment to observe it (from Exodus, the second book of both the Torah and the Bible), in the original Hebrew, in Spanish (the Bible Society translation), in Esperanto (the translation by Zamenhof, the creator of the language), and in my own English translation:

Dum ses tagoj laboru kaj faru ĉiujn viajn aferojn;
sed la sepa tago estas sabato de la Eternulo, via Dio;
faru nenian laboron,
nek vi, nek via filo, nek via filino,
nek via sklavo, nek via sklavino, nek via bruto, nek via fremdulo, kiu estas inter viaj pordegoj;
ĉar dum ses tagoj la Eternulo kreis la ĉielon kaj la teron, la maron, kaj ĉion, kio estas en ili;
sed en la sepa tago Li ripozis.
Tial la Eternulo benis la tagon sabatan kaj sanktigis ĝin.
Remember the day of Shabbat to make it holy.
Six days you will work and do all your crafts,
but the seventh day is a Shabbat to the Eternal, your God.
Do not do all your crafts:
you, your son, and your daughter,
your man-servant, your maidservant, your livestock, and your foreigner in your gates.
For in six days the Eternal made the sky and the earth, the sea and all that is in them,
and rested on the seventh day.
Because of this, the Eternal blessed the seventh day and made it holy.

For in six days the Eternal made the sky and the earth, the sea and all that is in them,
and rested on the seventh day.
Because of this, the Eternal blessed the seventh day and made it holy.

I again slept well last night and got up quite early, as well.
I taught only 5 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:00-10:30, 2:45-3:15, and 7:00-8:30 (talk about split shifts!).
Between about 11:00 and 2:00, I took a very leisurely walk around the southwestern part of town (mostly Shakhamon). I stopped to work out at the gym, and I also sat and enjoyed many beautiful shady places along the way. In some of them, I took pictures which I then immediately posted to Facebook. It was a warm day, so I wore short pants, a tank top, and sandals (without socks), and I tried to walk as much as possible in the shade. I was also in no particular hurry; my goal was more to bask in the lovely weather than to cover any particular distance or route.
I had a large salad with greens, a yellow bell pepper, and a tomato added and two veggie burger and cheese sandwiches for lunch at home.
In the afternoon, I took another much shorter and even more leisurely walk around the Mitzpe Yam neighborhood (just across the street from my place), including another short work-out at the gym. Again, I took a few pictures and soaked up the beautiful day.
I walked a total of 10.17 kilometers today.

I slept very well last night but still got up a bit later than usual. I felt really good, though.
I taught only 3 units of Berlitz lessons today: 10:15-11:00 and 11:30-1:00.
I got a load of washing done today, mostly whites, and it's still out drying on the rack in the hallway leading to my apartment.
I had weenies wrapped in tortillas and a red bell pepper for lunch at home today.
I took a long walk up highway 12 this afternoon, going as far as the point where the road starts to go down a little not long before the 2nd base. When I walked back down, I went directly to my doctor's appointment, getting there way before the time (4:30). I needed prescriptions for the enema and the antibiotics that I have to take before my prostate exam and biopsy next week.
In the evening, I made 2 short grocery shopping trips, one to each of the 2 nearby markets. So, now I'm very well stocked.
I walked a total of 10.67 kilometers today.

I woke up in the night last night and had trouble getting back to sleep. I don't exactly know why. In any case, I got up rather late as a result.
As always, I enjoyed chatting at the weekly English speakers' meeting at WIZO today.
I brought my little cart with wheels with me today to WIZO so that I could go down afterwards and get cat litter, which I did. The walk home proved to be surprisingly difficult -- pulling an extra 15 kg (33 lbs) uphill is harder than I had expected. I rested quite a bit and went very slowly up the grades, so I made it and got some really good exercise.
I taught 6 units of Berlitz lessons today: 3:00-4:30, 4:30-6:00 (but it was a late cancellation), and 7:00-8:30.
Before my last lesson, I walked a longer way up to the gym, worked out there, and walked back the same way. I wore a sweater, and it was quite pleasant despite a fairly stiff wind part of the way.
I walked a total of 10.53 kilometers today (including a lot of uphill walking pulling that extra 15 kg!)

This morning I got the information about my appointment in Tel Aviv and the flights up there and back to the local Maccabi office, and they called me later to let me know that everything is in order.
I taught only 4 units of Berlitz lessons today: 9:30-11:00 and 5:00-6:30.
After my first lesson, I set out on my main walk for the day. My destination was the cemetery, and I plotted the shortest course to walk there. It took just a little over half an hour to get there. Along the way, I picked up a few small rocks of varying colors. It's a Jewish custom to leave stones at a grave you visit as a sign that someone visited, so I left them on David's grave. It wasn't a particularly emotional visit for me -- just something that I had the time and wanted to do.
After resting a bit at the bus stop there, I walked down the road and into town. I stopped to pee at the Maccabi office and to rest a bit near there, then continued down to browse a little at HaMashbir LaTzarkhan ("Consumer Supply", the rather socialist name for the main national department store chain). Then I walked home very leisurely, stopping in several parks to rest, snap a few pictures, and check Gmail and Facebook (there's 4G nearly everywhere).
Arriving home, I had a somewhat late lunch of veggie burger and cheese sandwiches and a large salad with a tomato cut up in it.
In the late afternoon, before my second lesson, I walked up to the outdoor gym, worked out for a while, and walked home via a longer route.
After my final lesson, I worked a bit on my variations on HaTikvah for orchestra. I only made a little progress, but at least I did something on them. I feel like the fugue is petering out a bit, but maybe that will be okay, if I can do it gracefully.
I walked a total of 9.66 kilometers today.
